This particular one acts like a pneumonia. It began in Wuhan China. There’s an article about it now on cnn.com

That new corona virus is rather worrying, they now admit that human to human infection exists. I fear the spread of it will now only get worse, let's hope that it mutates again into being harmless as with the SARS virus a few years back.

in reply to 2greys

Also, common sense says it’s more widespread than being reported.

Very true, especially in China itself, where they are not exactly "open" and reserved to telling the true facts.

Yes one to watch out for and probably looking to spread world wide from it's source of origin with many hosts in China travelling to friends and family overseas on a daily basis. :(

Everett where the Boeing factory is Apeter? Hope this man gets best of care and the authorities try to limit any potential spread.

in reply to Lemon7

Yes by Boeing. He is stable but in isolation. My issue is he travelled to and from Wahun China. Several airports. How many did he expose. If I were to get this virus I’m pretty certain it would be my end.

I understand your concerns. People like us, who suffer with respiratory disease are more vulnerable to illnesses like this. Keep your exposure to crowds, people with infections etc to minimal. Use handwashing with hot water and soap after being out and about. All the other hints and advice on this site from people in the know on how to avoid infections. Look after yourself, hope the worry is eased soon. All good wishes

I think a few of us think that too expecially when over 70.

It is apparently contagious from day on. There are two theories one it came from an animal laboratory and two from the live animal market. The Chinese New Year is the biggest movement of people in the world a billion people usually. There was some huge eating event where 40,000 were having a banquet to try and make a new record unsure where I saw it now.

It is certain to spread but let’s hope it ends up being harmless as 2greys says.

Stay well Apeter. Xxxx

I feel for those who live in China, I understand that now they are starting the largest movement of people travelling round China for the New Year (Rat I think) to see relatives etc. If I lived in Hong Kong I would be very worried, as people visit their families. It is so difficult to get people to say they are unwell, when I gather the early symptoms are so usual, high temp. etc. If only we could come up with a colour code, so that our immune systems would turn us pale green, when fighting certain enemies.

I've been following this news with concern. The virus seems to be traveling quite far and quickly. I didn't know it has now reached the US. Part of my interest is selfish, I intend to visit my brother in a few weeks and will travel through 5 airports on the way and 6 on the way back. I know I should be concerned about those already affected by the virus, which of course I am, but I must admit I'm quite apprehensive.

I would be quite concerned to travel myself!

Yes I think people world wide will be concerned about this virus.

Is there any face mask that could be of any use, please? Does anyone know?

Amazon do quite a few disposable face masks for flu. I have a box in, just in case and they can deliver next day x

I have used disposable masks ever since being diagnosed. I have a hard time breathing thru them and find myself pulling them away from my face, which is not so good in crowded environments. I have recently ordered a Vogmask, which has filtered openings. Hoping it works. Will update when I receive Vogmask...J

I’d be interested to hear about the Vogmask jmsutt73. Xxx

I will update as soon as I wear it. It should be here later today. J

Izb1 profile image
Izb1 in reply to jmsutt73

Yes I think they are difficult to wear, I used one when I was doing some rubbing down, so the next lot I ordered have a bendable side so that they can be pouched allowing air to be inside the mask. I am hoping these will be ok, I wont really know until I go out in one.

The vogmask sounds alot better especially as they have a filter, I just didnt want a rigid one, let us know how you get on x

I have 2 Vog Masks....they work...and are pretty too, if I may add. You know the smelly lawn fertilizer at Lowe's it's always bothered me for as long as I can remember. It was so much better. You are going to be very happy, I was!

Hope you like them too!!

It arrived and I wore it. I still found myself pulling it away from my face to get air. Any suggestions?

megshafer profile image
megshafer in reply to jmsutt73

H!! Its one of those things, you just get use to. I pull mine away sometimes too, I think its human nature. But, not as much as in the beginning though.

Have a great weekend and good luck with your Vog Mask....

The papers and news channels will make it all headlines and get people panicking unnecessarily in China there’s been only 9 deaths you get more than that with normal flu a day

in reply to Martinack59

It is the Chinese New Year holiday right now. This is China’s most important holiday and the celebrations last a month. This means lots of travel to visit loved ones. This could get spread very quickly and widely.

According to the Today show, all festivities have been cancelled. It showed the lanterns being taken down. No flights out...no flights in...makes good sense.

This completely freaks me out. Managing my anxiety around my illness can be worse than the breathing problem itself. Imagine my joy at finding the virus has landed in Seattle - where my husband is and who is due home later this week 😱😱😱😱. Stay calm, stay calm

beech profile image
beech in reply to Sparkywoo

Yes, stay calm and take your normal precautions about avoiding infections where humanly possible.

I would feel concerned too given this is actually where your husband is, but hopefully he will equally take care and remain healthy 🤞

God knows how I would cope if this gets over here which it will due to airlines I've had a normal chest infection 3wk now antibiotics and steroids still can't shift it I'm thinking of buying a bubble to live in and plenty of cotton wool to wrap myself in lol will that work 😆

I am sure this will worry alot of people with lung problems as it affects the respiratory system but we should try not to panic. Make sure that when you go out you have used something like nasalguard, take your hand gel with you and use it, if any coughing, sneezing (usually by the kids) then cover your nose and mouth with a scarf. I do have some disposable masks but dont think we have reached that panic stage yet. It does seem to be spreading quickly and I will be keeping my eye on the news as Im sure most of us will. It is more worrying as the chinese new year approaches and more people are travelling, lets hope it can be contained and run its course quickly x

I haven't read all of the responses, so this may already have been addressed. I have heard tv reports saying that specific airports here in the U.S. are being monitored for passengers coming in from China, but not all Internaional airports have been mentioned. Also, that the passenger that tested positive is now in ICU in Washington state; I doubt if he was the only passenger on that flight he was on coming from China. Wondering if they are contacting all passengers who were on the plane?

in reply to jmsutt73

Yes, they are contacting and testing all on the planes. China says that it is doing everything to control this. We can’t panic. However, we can be prepared. Change plans if we need to etc...I read it can take up to one week for fever to start and they stated they’re not certain at what point people become infectious. China has flights to 60 countries and the airports are being alert and testing passengers. Knowledge is power.

Did anyone already exactly identified the virus, or is it a new mutation? In the US, what are CDC/NIH doing to combat this, does anyone know?

Do we know what works against it yet? When SARS was big a while back, everybody was trying to get some Tamiflu (Oseltamivir). People should not be ordering medicines online - God knows whether you're getting the real thing, or a counterfeited stuff, which is at best harmless, and at worst, actually poisonous. As long as there are desperate people, there will always be opportunistic crooks around ripping them off.

I am not surprised people are panicking - just read up on the Spanish flu a century and a few years back. Everywhere people died in their millions. Imagine being a soldier - you've just survived an awful World War 1, only to be mown down by the Spanish flu. :-(

Wuhan China, the entire city is quarantined. No traveling. They are working on a vaccine. Nothing yet.

HungryHufflepuff profile image
HungryHufflepuff in reply to

How quickly can a vaccine be developed after a virus has been identified? In my understanding there were only 7 coronaviruses known to exist so this is a whole new one.

in reply to HungryHufflepuff

The USA is working on a vaccine now and said trials first then public. Minimum a year and probably longer. Yes! This is a new virus!

HungryHufflepuff profile image
HungryHufflepuff in reply to

Oh wow. A year feels like forever away. I suppose vaccines are very complicated things to develop, and then the trials have to be successful.

Washington, Texas, California, Chicago Illinois more states showing up with corona virus. Vietnam now and my son is there for 3 weeks. Ugh
