Hi I am due to go for an aortic valve replacement soon and was wondering if people have a preference between mechanical and biprostetic valves.
I am currently leaning towards the biprostetic because I have read about the side effects of blood thinners associated with having a mechanical valve. Has anyone experienced any significant side effects.
I am 55 so aware I may need to go for another valve if I go for the prostetic type.
Thankyou

Hi, I had a mechanical valve in May (female aged 49) and am on warfarin, statins and lansoprozole since. I’ve no side effects from the warfarin ( or the other two medications) but visits vary according to the variations in readings. I did end up buying a home test kit (hospital don’t like this) but it’s just for my own peace of mind between visits, i still regularly go whenever they want me to. I believe it’s managed so closely to remove risk of any issues which has worked for me, plus I can ring and be seen anytime I want and it’s a quick in out visit.
It’s a personal choice but even with the hospital monitoring I’m glad to not have to go through OHS again and feel it was the right choice.
Just to add my surgeon said I had the choice but he saw no need to not have mechanical and suggested it was the best long term option.
