Myocarditis Pain
hi there , I been diagnosed with this 4 weeks ago and had chest pain most days , it comes when I do anything but does come on when at rest , Dr advises rest or it will flare up , could you be being too active or stressed ?? Try resting for 24 hrs , kind regards Emma
Hello, I've just recovered from myocarditis after about a year and a half with it; yes, the chest pain was with me for months. I was given no medications either (USA), but was told to rest and not drink alcohol and not lift anything over 5 lbs (2.2kg).
The people here in this forum explained to me that this didn't mean just to rest as we normally would after a hard day or something. They explained to me that you really have to stop almost all activity---i could not take my long walks, even slow ones, I could not go upstairs except VERY slowly, I could not do housework or lift a vacuum cleaner or move furniture to clean around it or lift a heavy pan to cook.
It was only after I completely rested in that way for more than a month, that I began to have less chest pain, and even then the pain would come back if I did even simple thing such as walked too quickly into another room or tried to lift anything. So I kept resting, almost all day every day sitting in a chair or lying in bed. I would stretch gently to stay limber and di slow isometric exercise, very gently, to keep muscles strong (I did lose a lot of muscle strength, as I had been very fit and active before).
And then somewhere about two months ago---so, after more than a year of myocarditis and months of resting--I realized I had not had the bad pains in a while! This will make you so hopeful and happy when it happens, and I wish it for you very soon. It is such a happy day when you realize---no chest pains for a while! I am old (65), and I also have lupus and thyroid disease, so it may not be so long for you to heal as it was for me. Very good luck to you and good wishes.
You might find it helpful to read some of the information on the Myocarditis Foundation site - i have given some links below
Myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle - so it is rather like the inflammation you can have after injuring any muscle, like in a sports injury - this is usually treated with rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE) followed with a gradual increase of exercise/activity, but you can not really ice, compress or elevate the heart, so all that is left is rest - and this is very important.
Think of a broken bone which needs a plaster cast to support the bone while it heals. If you don’t have a cast or other support, it will eventually heal but you risk disturbing the healing of the bone and muscle when you move around, this disturbs the healing area and causes more scarring. Scar tissue in bone, skin or muscle is not as strong as healthy tissue.
This is similar to working a sick heart, when it should be given the rest to heal itself. So it is important to be cautious about how much work you make your heart do during the healing, so that you let it heal with minimum scarring
