Genetic testing

(for information purposes)

Had an appointment at the hospital today to see the lead nurse to discuss family history (looks like I am the first with my problem) and as my cardiologist still can't work out why I had heart failure I have been referred for genetic testing.

She explained there are three possible outcomes 1) there is no genetic problem 2) this is 3) there is a grey area where they don't know. She advised if it is 3 then I can with my permission (granted) to be tested again in 5 years time taking into account any further medical advances.

I am all for it, particularly if my genes can be used (even in a tiny way) to advance the medics knowledge and secondly as it might have a knock on effect to my sister and her children (if she has that particular gene), which will give them plenty of time to hopefully do something about it.

I actually find it very interesting and exciting (but then I am slightly mad).

Which country are you in Uzininemm? The reason I ask is that here in the UK genetic testing by the NHS is very rare and only under very restricted conditions.

It's a shame as one of the BHF's chief scientists has repeatedly stated that genetic testing is the next great frontier in treating heart patients and preventing heart attacks and strokes.

Good luck!
