Niacin B3

Is there any research into the reported benefits of Niacin B3 on small Lp ? There seems to be some interest on the topic but not much evidence to support the idea that B3 reduces Lpa.

if you’re referring to elevated lipoprotein (a) niacin is no longer regarded as any sort of treatment. It causes liver damage and its use never lead to any reduction in events - which is the outcome required. My lipidologist says definitely not to use it because of the liver damage. He used to use it some years ago but the current advice is reduction of LDL to 1.8, weight management, smoking cessation, Mediterranean diet and stress reduction Basically the same advice as if you’ve had had a HA There are new drugs in the pipeline but will have tight criteria and probably another 5 years til they come out

What is your level?

Hi Jenny,

Thanks so much for your reply it’s very useful my current LDL level is 2.7 I guess the use of Niacin is “old hat” and no longer an area of research ?

Thanks again, much appreciated

Mark

I meant what is your lp(a)?

Niacin is used in the USA where it’s unregulated. They seem to focus on lowering lp(a) but no real research to see if that works to reduce events. And no reference to liver damage. They also use the Pauling protocol with loads of high dose Vit C. But you won’t find and lipidologist or cardiologist in the U.K. using such a protocol.
