Will be interesting to see any replies- it is a lipidologist that you would need. Down here in the south I can’t find one that specialises despite having a heart bypass then finding out about my elevated LPa! Good luck
Most private healthcare providers have a search function where you can look for a specialist in your area... maybe start there?
Hi, my lipo (a) is 240 I was referred to the general lipid clinic at the local hospital. I was tested did not receive an appointment just a letter saying my risk was high no treatment prevention or cure take stations. I am scared I am going to have a heart attack and feel my life is over tbh. It sounds weak of me but I have sufficient a lot of anxiety since. I was in hospital a few months ago fir something else, a consultant told me stations would calcify my arteries even more and took me off them. He said get referred back to lipid clinic for injections ( can't remember what they were called) My GP did this, the lipid clinic write to my GP and said get me back in stations!!!
There is little known about LPa in a lot of the NHS. My mother was put on statins in her 40’s - is now 76 & has never had an heart event. I didn’t get statins until after my heart event at 51- which is then when we discovered the LPa situation - which we know came down my mothers line. So try to think that it’s not a definite that you’ll have a heart event- try to manage the risk factors - including stress. HeartUK has some good information on LPa.
It would have been better if I could have seen a lipidoligist. The GP requested an appointment with him but he stated there is nothing they can do and take the stations! So I did not get the opportunity to ask anything. The consultant I spoke to when I was in hospital said stains work by putting a covering over unstable plaques it calcifies them basically and raises lipo a levels. He also said statins take 5 yrs to work by hardening soft plaque.
He took me off them in hospital, now I am out of hospital my GP wrote to the lipid clinic. He said leave it 3 months test me again and put me back on the same statins. I want to see a private lipidologist if they exist. Worried sick, I won't walk my dog in the fields incase I have a heart attack, I am frightened when driving my car in case I have a HA. I am worried sick how much damage has already been done, I just want to talk to a specialist and have the opportunity to ask some questions.
sorry for delayed reply. I only discovered the issue post my heart attack & bypass. Luckily the hospital had a hereditary department - although once I was told that’s been it & I’ve just had the find info myself. Mine was/is 469.
it’s such a tricky subject. I think knowing post my heart event helped explain my paternal nans early demise at 49 & my brothers heart events in his 30’s. My ldl is less than 1.4 yet I still had the damage- so I feel safer now I’m on heart medication & hope that will help prevent another attack- but who knows with genetics!!! I follow quite a few people on Twitter- mainly in US- which I find useful. It just annoys me to have to always explain it to GP’s
