Fast AF

so… I am a 58 year old and have just experienced my 3rd episode of fast AF which have occurred over 7 years. Each time I have required A&E admission and cardio version as drugs have not been effective. Following the last two I have undergone Echos, 24 hour ECG and 24 blood pressure monitoring all coming back normal. There are no triggers for these episodes.

I am concerned as it will likely occur again but as there is no obvious triggers don’t know what to do.

Has anyone experienced similar please, any advice would be appreciated

I discovered that artificial sweeteners were a sure trigger for my AF. I now avoid everything containing artificial additives. Also do your best not to slouch or wear anything tight around your body.

thank you, on the last 2 occasions I woke up to it but your advice is great to have. I am beginning to wonder if the men’s pause could also trigger

Like you I was in And E, numerous tests. Everything was normal. Over the years, I have worked out that certain things trigger attacks. Eating very late at night, sparkling wine, red, white wine, cheese, coffee in the evening have all been dropped with success. It is worth recording what you ate when you have an episode.Like Jean suggests, don't slouch especially when eating helps.

I’m 62 and had two episodes of AF, the first in 2014 a couple of days following a 10k road race, and in 2022 during a walking holiday. Neither of these episodes made me feel unwell as my heart rate wasn’t so high (up from 50 to around 90 bpm) - I was able to continue exercise. On both occasions my AF was corrected by cardioversion. I’m not sure of the causes of these episodes, although the first one could be the result of the 10k race - they also found a mild leak on my mitral valve, which can also be a cause. Regarding the second episode, I did wonder if alcohol consumption may have contributed as I did drink a bit more beer than usual whilst on holiday.
