Hello, I am awaiting AVR , probably to happen by the end of March. I am keen to connect with anyone who has had an Edwards Perimount valve and how long before it starts to calcify. I would like a Resilia, simply because it is new, albeit with no established track record, but it isn't available on the NHS at the hospital where I will go. I would have to go completely private. Any information gratefully received.
Thank you

Hi there, join our Facebook group if you are able. I'm waiting for AVR too but no idea when. Most in the group have already had surgery and can advise on so much around it Joanne
Have you discussed the choice of valve with your surgeon. Personally I would consider a mechanical valve as some here have had them for forty years. I would not relish the idea of further surgery at 75 - 80. Something to think about maybe?
I would question the situation regarding the Resilia. I had one at 61 in Harefield 2 years ago. They are expensive which is why the NHS try to ration them. Usually the over 60s don't get them which is pants. My surgeon wanted me to have it, so I got it. Wise to do your research. Good luck, Tessie
I had my AVR in August 19, I was 63 and it took place at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. Like you, after chatting with my surgeon it was suggested that I have the Edwards Perimount valve and also like you I was told that I didn’t qualify for a Resilia valve.
The type of valve you go for is very much a personal decision depending on lifestyle. I like to travel so the thought of having to take warfarin didn’t appeal.
My recovery was good, I felt like Wonder Woman by six months post surgery. I take 1 aspirin per day and a very low dosage of Bisoprolol - easy life. Yes, I may have to have surgery again in the future but my surgeon said that at that point they would consider replacing via TAVI, less invasive.
Only you can make this decision.
I hope all goes well for you - the run up to the op is much worse than the actual thing itself. The surgeons and staff are amazing and look after you so well.
