HGV/PSV After Triple Bypass.

Hi, anybody with the above licence, who’s had a bypass just wondering did you have to do anything about your licence or job?

I had been driving class1 on a agency basis before my heart attack last year. After bypass I’ve done no driving other then my car 8 weeks after just to be safe. I’m about to apply to do a little bit of PSV driving so I’m going to have a medical next week which I’m very happy to have but should I have told the DVLA? My surgeon said no driving until after 6 weeks.

After having this medical next week they will know then I guess.

Just to clarify, I would not do any HGV/ PSV driving until I absolutely know I’m aloud to.

Many thanks.

Yes, you need to tell the DVLA and fill in the appropriate paperwork if you have a PSV/HGV licence.. Currently because of CovID medical enquiries are taking longer tha normal. I know one person who had to take an exercise ECG before they regained their licence. The DVLA Web page is here:

gov.uk/coronary-artery-bypa...

Where people do not need to tell the DVLA they still need to tell their insurers or their policy may be invalid.

Hi there, I had a HA & 6 stents in 2 blockages. I had to notify the DVLA. The only way to get my license back was to have a treadmill test & a test to see what my ejection fraction had come back to. It was 35% while having my procedure. 3 months later it was up to 50% , which is pretty good as it wouldn't be much above 55% for a fit person. Once done the test results were sent to DVLA, you then have to wait for their specialist to say yes or no. I got a yes. It did take a while due to covid as it was this time last year, a letter from my employer stating I was a critical worker helped.Best of luck, keep pushing in a polite manner

Thank you very much for that info!! I might have messed up a bit I think. I’ve not done any driving of HGV or PSV since bypass. To be honest I wasn’t really planning on doing anymore driving for a living full stop. But then this nice little job came up unexpectedly, so now I’ve passed all the written test, drugs test, and driving assessment I just need to go and have a medical to see if I’m fit to drive maybe next week. But reading your post perhaps I should have looked at starting the process much earlier!!! Oh well, will go and see what the doctor says. I feel pretty good, leg a bit sore at ankle sometimes but better than when I did work!!!!

Will let you know how it goes!!!!

I was always pretty confident of getting my license back, my HA was a bit of a shock to me & a massive shock to everyone that knew me, including my workmates. I know of quite a few who are far less healthy than I am & have got their HGV back. It's just a question of time & following the process, if it hadn't if been for covid I would of had the tests at about 6 weeks not 13!!!!. Best of luck
