Reading up on the 1918 Flu epidemic I came across this snippet

It was interesting that Pneumonia was call the " Old Mans Friend " because it used to take it victims in the Night usually without much fuss. They just slowly slipped away, but the majority of Patients had serious underlying conditions that they would of died of without the Flu.

Interesting comparison with today treatment plan for Corona Virus

Stay Well

Stay safe

The pneumonia that killed people during the Spanish Influenza was ARDS. Just like now. Not anyone's friend, it's a ghastly way to die.

'Regular' pneumonia is not as bad a way to die as ARDS pneumonia and cytokine storm (what's killing the younger more fit patients).

I know, sorry. I'll just go quietly now.

Pneumonia has been called the old people’s friend for a very long time, even after antibiotics were first used.

Having had both pneumonia and ARDS it’s not much fun!

iIf you do get ARDS you don’t remember much about it at least that was my experience, I was in Italy at the time. Didn’t realise how poorly I was til I got home and read hosp notes.
