Why have we dropped out of most vulnerable category as employer treats less risk

Hi all

Hope you are well!

Only found this site recently and has been a great help to me.My biggest concern is I am classed a key worker amd although requested to self isolate for 14 days, there is a sense of pressure to return as I work in a bank.

My question is that whilst data collected from China clearly finds those with cardiology problems have made up the largest percentage of deaths..

Why then have we fallen into a lesser category which has sent signals to employers that we are no longer vulnerable and therefore open us up to greater risk when the spread of disease is increasing..

Concerned for my health...

The list of 1.5 million contain conditions that affect the immune systems ability to detect and respond to the virus. Cardiac conditions do not affect the immune response- rather the bodies ability to cope with the immune response. If you read the BHF advice it points out we are no more likely to contract the virus than our healthy counter-parts- those on the most vulnerable list are much more likely than us to contract the virus. That is the difference between the lists.

You refer to data from China showing cardiac problems being the number one co-morbidity- that data is influenced by the percentage of the population with cardiac problems. Much higher percentage of the population have cardiac problems than the much rarer conditions listed. Therefore, on pure statistics you would expect this to be number 1.

Change the statistic to: number of deaths with comorbidity X / number of people with comorbidity X and I would not be surprised if one found those on the list were dying much more frequently as they have no/ little immune response with which to fight the virus. As cardiac patients- we have an uncompromised immune responses but impaired ability to cope with the stress of a strong immune response.

There is quite a big and sensible difference between the two lists.

Hi

Thankyou for your reply as appreciated.Understand your point on statistics from China, just that heart and stroke largest health killer in Scotland. I also have an auto immume condition too. So glad to hear I have nothing to worry about then.

Happy days;)
