Cardiomyopathy and flu or cold

Hi, I have hocm and have been getting on fine no probs since diagnosis 6 years ago. But now, having breathing problems after being hospitalised and diagnosed with AF. Anyone else struggling with cold or flu? If I get ill, can barely walk between 2 rooms. At only 45, this is scary.

I have HCM (no obstruction), paroxysmal AFib and anemia (among other things), all of which can cause breathing problems, and colds or flu make it worse.

I am sorry you have this problem, I know how scary it can be.

I would suggest you speak with your doctor about this, you can at least hopefully get some reassurance that it's expected, and perhaps teach you breathing techniques that help.

Wishing you wellness...

Thank you so much, so reassuring to know we're not on our own with this. Seeing my cardiologist in few weeks. Can I ask, do u ever experience crackle noise from your lungs, like listening to rice krispies?

Yes, I actually do sometimes! Very odd! Doctors don't seem to be concerned at all! I also had a bad DVT/multiple PE last year, was in hospital for 2 weeks. It took me a while to heal, and I still have some lung issues from that. I think it's everything combined as to why I have this cough/lung sounds/etc...and it gets scary to me because I'm the one it's happening to! It's even more frustrating because I don't have but maybe one risk factor for all that (DVT & PE), and I don't smoke or drink, etc...etc... I do have an inhaler prescribed and use it only when I feel necessary, it sure seems to help. Maybe you could ask your doctor about an inhaler? Please keep us updated... :)
