Patient Advice and Liaison Services, they sort out any problems, in theory !

Yes, agree with the in theory! In the early noughties I raised two issues - one related to my late mother and the other to myself- and neither was resolved. Ultimately I decided life was too short!

In my experience, and that of a friend who has a relative with complex needs, they are extremely useful if/when there are minor issues that involve more than one medical team, especially when these are in different NHS trusts, such as getting medical data transferred. Sometimes, unfortunately, making a formal complaint seems to be the only way to get things moving and sort out those issues. For me, they've been a real help.

I do wish folk wouldn't use abbreviations.

PALS could mean Patient Advice and Liaison Service - a service hospitals have to help patients and families who need advise or wish to complain.

It could also mean Paediatric Advanced Life Support - a way of resuscitating a child in cardiac arrest.

Hope that makes sense.

Regards Ron.

Agree! I have been caught out in the past. The first use of any abbreviation in any new post should be followed by the full wording.

Ooophs that may have been me. I forgot to write out the full name of the Patient and Liasion Setvice ( PALS) recently.

I can only apologise because I agree that abbreviations shouldn't be used.I usually do try not to use unexplained abbreviations

I will endeavour to be more careful in future and thank you for the reminder 😁

Just to confuse the issue further, when my father was in his last days a few years ago, we had a great deal of help from the Community Palliative Care Team. The local hospice called them the PALS team!!

Hi I agree with you about abbreviations there seems to be a lot of them on this forum, no doubt I will get to know what they all mean and start using them myself. Thanks for reply.

Views about PALs seem pretty varied. They were originally set up to try and resolve issues before patients and relatives reached the complaining stage. I’ve found them very useful at smoothing out glitches like communications and decisions between different Specialists, lost appointments etc.. Where they don’t seem to have effect is with major problems like poor doctors, or long waiting times.

I've complained over this irritating habit so many times stop being lazy we are not Doctors etc, and it becomes boring listening to people who think they know more than they really do

No, Three Letter Abbreviations!

Some years ago somebody at work incorporated a TLA into a TLA causing total confusion! Afterwards the first use of any abbreviation had to be expanded on first use and a list of those used included in any requirement document. IMS (It Makes Sense).

Technically it is an acronym if it use initial letters, abbreviations are when you use part of the word so MI is an acronym, while Hearties is an endearment acronym. (Can’t believe I just looked this up.)

I had a colleague who used to just make them up to include in reports etc, and no one ever challenged him- he even quoted them in meetings successfully... I learned a lot from him😀
