Hoping for information for my mother in law

Good evening I’m new to this group. Here goes ... my mother in law (72) had a valve replaced 4 years ago and has emphysema. She also has swollen ankles. At the start of this year her breathing has got a lot worse she is out of breath just sat down. She saw her consultant at the cardiac centre a few weeks ago and was told the valve is leaking but it’s nothing to worry about. We went to the doctors to day due to her breathing. He said that the reason she is so breathless is due to her heart. I understand that but what I don’t understand is why he said that the damage has been done and there is nothing he can do to help with her breathing difficulties. I asked about oxygen he said it wouldn’t help I asked about oramorph he said that wouldn’t help. So I would like to know if there is anything that can help her she has lost all her independence. I would appreciate any advice we are due bk at the cardiac centre next week thanks

Hi Louisek84,

I'm sorry you are having these concerns regarding your mother in law and that she has lost her independence at the moment. It is difficult to give specific advice as she has 2 medical conditions which could both be causing the problem. However,If her heart is working under strain, doctors would normally prescribe medication that reduces some of the pressure on the heart and help it to pump more efficiently. Oramorph and oxygen aren't given routinely in this case as they may have a negative effect on the person's breathing pattern and not be suitable for someone with the conditions she is living with.

I hope you are able to get more answers at the cardiac centre next week. If you want to talk things through in more detail with one of the helpline cardiac nurses in the meantime, the number is 0300- 330-3311. There is someone to talk to Monday- Friday from 9-5.

I hope I've helped.

Take Care,

Philippa
