It is a massive shock when you are told something like this.. however cardiomyopathy has a big range. I too have this condition. I was diagnosed with it at 33 and here I am at 57 having worked a busy career and been a single parent inbetween.
I am sure they will carry out a number of tests which will assess the extent of your condition... and can then recommend the best treatment for you.
I know it can feel unfair when you have been fit and healthy and have looked after yourself.
I now consider myself lucky that they found it.... and could therefore have treatment to keep me well and protect my heart to stop any deteriorisation.
If you have any questions please ask away..... if you need a rant... we will listen.. .. and will be with you on this journey.
I have the same condition which was diagnosed last May after I collapsed with acute heart failure and Type 1 respiratory failure.i was horrified and terrified as was my husband who thought he was loosing me. I was very fit and am 64. My EF was only 20% .They think it was caused by a virus that attacked my heart. Anyway, I was given very poor prognosis BUT, i had a CRTD fitted in August and am doing well. EF now 39% . I think I am nearly back to my previous fitness I went up the Skirrid Mountain last week, (my photo is me at the trig point. google it! )I have joined a walking group and once a week we do before 4 and 5 miles, on mixed terrain, garden , walk a couple of miles every day locally and generally get on with life. So my message is try and stay positive. Can you get on a cardiac rehab course near you? That will help but am also a great believing mind over matter. Keep strong. Medication etc. Is great these days too. Take care and take each day it comes. 😊
I know how you feel, I’m 40 years old and have worked out all my days. Loved going to the gym and swimming, cycling and running. Then in March I was diagnosed with DCM.
It’s really hard to get to grips with, I found the mental recovery was the most difficult but speaking with my cardiac rehab team has been incredible source of comfort. Talking about meds, my feelings, my worries etc. It’s easy to say but try not to worry too much, it will get better! I’m three months on and I’m back to exercising again ( albeit structured and not at the level I was used to) but I’m getting there, and I’m confident you will too 👍🏻 just takes time and a bit of hard work.
Remember you’re not alone, we’ve all been there and felt those feelings, please don’t sit in silence talk to someone.
