I haven't had your husband's problems, and since both are fortunately uncommon you may not find anyone at present on this forum who has gone through this.

But I do want to send my sympathy for you both going through such a very difficult time, which presumably came completely out of the blue. My husband has had some very long cardiac stays in hospital and I know how dispiriting it can be - and how surprisingly exhausting it is to be the one sitting by the bedside for long periods. I haven't had mediastinitis but I was readmitted after heart surgery on high strength iv antibiotics for some weeks, and it is tough.

I do hope the antibiotics are dealing with the infection. Have you thought of phoning the bhf nurses? They are very understanding. I also found the hospital chaplains are very helpful, for all faiths and none.

I wish you both the very best
