All carbs turn to sugar - body burns sugar, too much sugar body makes fat.

Fasting burns fat because no sugar available. If you eat all day and evening - no fasting and steady , inexorable Increase in weight unless you change your ways.

Any body on the 5--2 diet, with13 hour daily fast (eat between 8 am and 7 pm) and calorie control during the eating period?

My doc has recomended me fasting 16 hours so I usually eat breakfast/lunch around 10-11am, then supper 5-6 pm, then fast 6pm til 10am. I can have water. Also no eating 3 hours before bedtime. Ive been doing it for about 3 weeks now, weight is slowly going down, it has been easy so far. He also wants me to get my carbs down around 50 grams daily... that is hard. I can do 75-100, but havent got the carb thing going too well.

A great big Well done. How is your Doctor defining carbs?

Biggest thing is avoid all processed foods, avoid high sugar, limit fruits to 1 or 2 servings, go heavy on veggies; I dont eat much bread, cereal etc but I do love potatoes so try and stick with sweet potatoes,

I was interested to see you recommend going easy on fruits. I’m on a SlimmingWorld diet at the moment and I just love fruit. I eat quite a lot I’m afraid. I wonder if I am eating too much. I limit my carbs, i.e. bread and potatoes, and Only have potatoes at the weekends although they are ‘free’ on SW. I only have two small slices of whole meal bread in a day. I am losing weight, so far 12 lbs., but it is still early days.

Hi there, well done for losing weight -:) however, too much fruit is not good. You need to be careful due to the sugar content in fruits. Also some fruits contain more sugar than others. Better to avoid fruit at night and drink lots of warer. All the best

My cardio nurse suggested the 5:2 diet for me & have been doing the fast on Mondays & Thursday's for last 4 weeks at 600 cals per day. Was hard 1st couple of times but into it now. I generally do the same each fast day. Start with a banana at 60 cals round 1100 then have a large bowl of salad containing chopped celery, carrot, red onion & cucumber with a small tin of tuna round 1430. This comes in at about 140 cals but fills me. I have black tea & fizzy water throughout the day & if hungry chew on carrots & celery sticks. I have a slimming world meal approx 1930 which are between 320 & 380 cals & quite satisfying, then nothing else until the next day.

With general cutting down as well on non fast days the weight is coming off steadily & I feel brighter.

This diet is a lifestyle change, not a quick fix, but very manageable if you set your head round it. You can vary your fast days if you need to as well. I've also found that I'm not ravenous the day after a fast day as you may imagine. Give it a go!

I have eaten a Mediterranean diet for years and for 5 years have fasted (600 calories) once per week to maintain my weight. I also usually don't eat for 12 hours overnight. The Med. diet is delicious and I would definitely give it a go.
