New Diagnosis: Apical Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

Hi All,

I've just been diagnosed with Apical Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy following months of angina like symptoms. It's come as a huge shock. I won't be able to return to my job as a Firefighter so things are going to change drastically on the work front. I'm also 3 years into studying the knowledge of London to become a Black Taxi driver so don't know whether I will be able to continue with this as I would need to pass Group 2 license medical.

I would love to hear from anyone with the same or similar condition particularly if they are a taxi driver as well.

Hi JC1970 so sorry that you're unable to continue your job as a firefighter. The BHF has some info on life with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, link here: bhf.org.uk/publications/hea...

In terms of jobs you may or may not be able to do, I would contact our nurses on the Heart Helpline. They can give you some advice on this or point you in the right direction.

Really hope this helps!

Hello JC

I’ve recently been diagnosed with HCM and don’t think I’ll be able to return to my work as a self employed chimney sweep. Have you found any useful resource or tips for new employment post diagnosis and recovery.
