Hi there, LoraHU and all site members.

I was keen to participate when I got the email re this poll. And I'm sure the findings will be interesting. But I was hoping it might go a bit further and ask more detailed, specific questions. For instance, I'm in my 50s and I believe I have AS - so naturally I'm interested to see how many other adults with ASDs access this online facility. But my reason for using the site isn't simply that I have a condition. I sought it out (this and other ASD/AS websites) because I desperately need an officially recognised late-life Aspergers diagnosis; cannot afford to go private; am getting little support from my GP (who, to be fair, is always scared to refer for fear of evoking our PCT's wrath and, anyway, seems to know bugger all about Aspergers or why it should need diagnosing); and because I hope to find help/insight/advice from others who've overcome similar problems. And whilst the benefit of just mixing online with fellow Auts/Aspies shouldn't be underestimated, I'd imagine there are a hundred and one other sub-reasons* why individuals log in here - all of which would surely combine to give an even more in-depth understanding of the community as a whole.

And finally, if I'm beating my proverbial gums here needlessly coz plans already exist to extend the poll and/or follow it up with additional questionnaires or what-have-yous - then please forgive me. I've been told before that I can come across a bit rude, or like an annoying know-it-all tw@t - or, indeed, both those things at once - but I honestly don't mean to. Still, on the plus side, those are fairly typical Aspergers traits, so with any luck my diagnosis should be straightforward - providing I ever get the right referral, that is.

Thank you for having me!

* "sub-reason" - yes, you're right. There's no such term. I just made it up.

My partner went to gp for referral, she was awful. Kept saying that he would have a label for the rest of his life, and couldn't understand why someone would actually want to be diagnosed. He pushed though and even though she clearly didn't like it, he was referred to an amazing line worker and is having an assessment.

Don't worry too much about coming across as rude, just say it will give you peace of mind to actually know.

Hi this poll was kind of tough for me to answer because several answers apply...I have Aspergers myself, I have a 3yr old daughter with Autism (which also makes me her carer), I am interested in learning/sharing experiences of ASDs...as such I could answer the poll several times over with every time a different answer, they are all part of the main reason I came here.

Looking forward to learning, sharing experiences & helping where I can. xxx

Hi,

As spring song above, I have multiple reasons, my son has autism, my daughter probably aspergers, I am also interested, have done an Open university course about autism as a starter towards my late start in life degree. :-)

I have other health conditions myself and am already a member of other health unlocked communities.

Take care, gentle hugs love Sheena xxxxxx

There were more than 1 options for me too. I have Aspergers, but am not tested, my two sons have Aspergers, both tested but one of them has drug induced problems so the doctor was reluctant to give the diagnosis. The thing is, I know.

I researched it so much and read a very good book.

I also have other health problems, fibromyalgia and RLS.

I came here as I was diagnosed with Asperger's when I was 37 and the NHS is ill equipped, let alone capable of comprehending the implications that it has on the life of a person. Since I have been through it all and now am a more wise and capable aspie, I felt compelled to share my experiences in the hope that I can make a difference to those less fortunate than I am and have yet to come to terms with being who they are and what they are.

If a neurotypical person had to wear our shoes for a week, I would doubt they could and if they did for a month, they would cave in. Autistic people are the incredible minds that have a real gift and not some egotistical dream. Electricity, computers, physics, chemistry, in fact most sciences were created because of a gifted savant mind. Be proud of who you are, because only a gifted mind can survive the poisoned thoughts of humanity at large!
