peak flow meters

Hya,

Just wondering if anyone else has ever got different readings?

I meant to say. I keep an eye on peak flow readings and when i am fine i hit around 500 to 550ish at home.

But when i see nurse or doc, i do peak flow and its often lower by about 50.

I never hit same on their meters.

I think it might be cos my meter has plastic mouthpiece to blow through. But when i use nurse or docs meter, it has cardboard one and cardboard one is bigger diameter than mine.

Its only reason i can think for different readings

My peak flow is always different in the doctors office too but mine reads about 50L/min higher on the doctor's peak flow meter than mine. At first I thought it was because my peak flow meter was old (but still new enough to be EU scale), but it still happens now I have a shiney new one.

I did wonder if it was to do with the cardboard tube instead of the plastic one, but upon thinking about it I've just realised that Its probably because I have to take my reliever inhaler before I leave the house because of the cold air and the fact that the long steep hill I have to walk up to get to the doctor's brings on EIA. I feel pretty silly now I've figured out the reason for the difference in my PEFR as it's blindingly obvious when you think about it. Sorry this post isn't much help to you, maybe someone else can ahead some light on things.

All replies are very welcome

But perhaps i could test that theory next time i see nurse :)

Howie, I've bumped an old thread. Perhaps you could take your own peak flow meter along to the nurse or doc next time (as suggested by Kate) to compare readings?

Hi ginny

Now that is an excellent idea !!

It is also something i didnt even think about,

which i must

admit, does make me look

& feel a bit stupid really.

However, i shall follow this advice & post results.

[I can take a little comfort knowing someone else posted same question before me]

Bet it was a bloke that time too :)

Yes, i know my post appears 3 times.

My phone played up.

I wasnt stuttering

I have 2 different makes of peak flow, a mini wright and a vitolograph. I get a difference of around 50l/min more on the mini wright. So yep I think maybe its the meters!
