Sorry everyone when I said obvious I meant obvious as in one is smoking related and the other is occupational related. I had wondered if there were any differences between the two other than smoking and occupational. I was told that mine was caused by passive smoking as I have never smoked above 20 cigs in my life and none of them was after about 1989. I have however worked in mining, construction and a warehouse where there was a lot of sawdust in the air. So although I concede the passive smoking I've done in the past will definitely have contributed I'm tending to think it will be more of an occupational disease in my case.

Hi Wiggins,

Me no expert but,for instance, diesel is so bad because the type of fumes expelled mean the particles are ones that wind up going deep into the lungs and this is why is it cancerous and really bad for the environment, other particles and fibres in minuscule sizes present in occupational locations would be similar, such as artificial fibres released when working too, even at home, like dealing with rock wool, all of those things are really bad for one's health, whether rock wool fibres also are ale to next deep in the lungs I don't know, but I avoid that stuff like the plague now, problem is, we know we need to wear masks but people even working professionally do not, simply because the masks are so uncomfortable, so in a dusty environment many people are exposing themselves to great potential harm.

Vapours are bad too because though they seem invisible and are only apparent because of the awful stink, still the fumes released also contain substances, if you were to collect all the vapour in a jar you'd be able to analyse substances, solids in it.

I think all of those occupational things may be at least as harmful as smoke from tobacco.

Yeah I agree they have to be at least as harmful. When I was speaking of differences between occupational and smoking related COPD I really meant does anyone know if there are differences in the progression rate of the disease.

However I was told mines from passive smoking. Now although to some extent I agree it will be as I've always been in to pubs and clubs, ever since I was about 17 and I've freinds and family that smoke, I've also had dusty occupations, one of them being mining so I personally tend to think of mine as being occupational. Hence the query.

Like you I'm into keeping well away of smokers now and aerosols, fuel fumes etc it's the getting through to other people not to smoke or spray things around me thats the pain.
