Azithromycin and IBD

Good morning everyone

Firstly I just wanted to give a brief update from my last post 3 months ago. I have Bronchiectasis and I also have developed Ulcerative Colitis since that initial diagnosis. At the time it was thought this might have been linked to me taking Azithromycin as a prophylactic for a year. Although no definite link was established, I was taken off Azithromycin. That was several years ago. Last year I had a very bad year lung-wise with multiple back-to-back infections. I sought advice from this forum and received many kind and helpful replies. Armed with a more proactive determination and some of your suggestions, I saw a Consultant at my local hospital. I asked to be given Carbosisteine and to be put on a pulmonary rehab course, both of which he agreed to and has put in place. He also advised that I go back on Azithromycin to break this cycle of reinfection. I have agreed to that course of action as there seems little other choice, but I am concerned that it will cause a flare up of my UC. I just wondered - and I know it’s a long shot - whether there is anyone else on this forum on Azithromycin who also has UC or Crohn’s disease who could share their experiences?

I would also just like to thank you all for the support you gave me 3 months ago which gave me the strength I needed to be more proactive.

I was put on this AB, 3 times a week, and they gave me my worst bout of ulcerated mouth ever. My mum was prone to mouth ulcers, so I think it's hereditary. I've also stopped taking Nsaid's (ibrabrufen and others) and use toothpaste without Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), which can also cause them. I'm guessing that ulcers anywhere around the body are related??? Anyway, have had no ulcers in my mouth for sometime, touch wood.
