Yes, I’ve tried NAC. It’s similar to carbocisteine (I think they’re both called mucolytics). Some people swear by these but sadly neither worked for me. But I believe they’re very safe. You can buy NAC capsules over the counter but not carbocisteine, but your gp can prescribe those on the nhs.

Thanks for that but I find that most GPS are ignorant of anything alternative x

I have been on carbosistene for years. I dont think my consultant or GP see it as alternative medicine .

Mucolytics aren’t regarded as “alternative”. My consultant recommended me to try them. You have to try them for at least a month to see if they’re helping you or not.

Oh yes I have been taking nacsys 600mg effervescent tablets for 2years after the gp changed me over to them and it's been a revelation for me, I have more energy during the day now as the clearance is easier to do in the morning than when I was on carbocysteine.

many years ago while working in routine laboratory we treated sputum specimens with equal quantity of nac shaking mechanically for 10 minutes to dissolve and liquidise the sputum before culturing.

that is what it does in controlled conditions.

some people report improvement and some dont. you can only try

I’ve used NAC for years, 600mg twice daily, keeps my lungs clear . I prefer it to using prescribed meds as it more natural.

I’ve used Solgar NAC capsules, 1 a day with a meal and lots of water for a few years now, and I find it helps me. I really notice if I miss a day. I cleared it with my Consultant who was happy for me to use it.

Yes I actually tried the supplement form before I got it prescribed. It wasn’t something the doctor was keen to prescribe on the NHS given I don’t yet have a diagnosis to go by so I had to venture it myself. But the supplements helped and I was able to get the effervescent tablets prescribed which are better. Worth a try ❤️

My Dr said she was not happy to prescribe a mucolytic so I carried on with the NAC otherwise I get so congested I can't function. Strange though because my Husband has been prescribed with Carbocysteine. Different Drs. eh
