How long do people usually go on for after being referred to a hospice

Good Morning unified

Difficult one to answer.

Can be weeks, months or years.

In hospital care, some go as outpatients to get to know the team for crafts and other nurturing care and interests, some progress to residential patients, some go straight in as residential and others 2 - 3 times a weeks. I think its patient choice with guidance and offering of good patient care needs.

I think also it can be care at home or in a care home or hospital.

Best wishes x

Tricky to answer unified. Some people go to a hospice for sort of respite just to be cared for for a couple of weeks before returning home.

Medics believed my husband had three weeks left to live so a hospice in Surrey was on the cards, fortunately there was no space so he went to a Barchchester nursing home in West London instead. I say fortunately because he went on for another 14 months! That would have been impossible at the hospice as they are mostly charity run.

If you are asking the question for yourself then I wish you the very very best. I've known two hospices well, one in Surrey and one in Suffolk and they were absolutely wonderful to be in for patients, families and staff. X

It very much depends on the referral. A friend of my wife as under hospice care for a couple of years now. Her palliative care is organised through the team there. It very much depends on the individual and that individuals condition. Sadly there is no easy answer to your question.

Yes depends on the circumstances, my husband was offered hospice care four years ago . Tbh he was horrified and refused and since then has mostly been confined to the house . In January he was admitted to hospital , very poorly and lucky to survive but amazingly since then he has slowly been recovering and during the past few weeks is probably feeling better than he was four years ago ! Copd is so unpredictable ! Tbh we have taken things into our own hands since lockdown - we bought an air purifier and he started to take Nac for the first time and I think being in isolation has given his lungs a real chance to heal . Whatever the reason I wouldn’t have believed that when hospice was mentioned he would be as well as he is now four years on Good luck xx
