Ok so how the study will work very briefly

Study will include 800. Participants and last up to 57 wks. The study will compare their study drug with a placebo. ( no active ingredients)

I will continue to take my regular meds throughout.

I wont know which one im on but in an emergency my GP will be told and myself. The study does involve genetic research and i would need to agree to this on consent form. Scientists want to know people respond to treatments and understand COPD This is done by studying DNA.

There are side effects of course and they are listed.

I can discontinue the study.

Its a 29 page participation and info sheet & consent form!

So ive got til next week to make up my mind!

What would you do??

It sounds quite interesting but you need to weigh up the pros and cons of the study. If you do it, good luck. Xxxx

Yes I will do x

What would I do? If I was in your shoes? It would depend on two things. (1) How high-minded I was and (2) How much I needed those £30's. At least one of those would have to score pretty highly.

Hi Don,

Im not needing the money that much!

I guess i was thinking along the lines that there isnt much else out there to help me/us as the disease gets worse-my mum died with emphysema before her time and i would like to be around to see my first grandchild born in the hopefully near future-and be around as long as possible for my two daughters ( their dad lives abroad and they dont see him) so im focusing on the future i guess.

I don't see how being part would help in that direction, so I would say no. But that's just what I would do, which is what you asked.

Hi Don I guess i was thinking that if im not placed in placebo study i could at most benefit from the drug for a year and if im not then from the health check ups for the duration!

Personally after serious pro and con research, I believe I would go for it.

The thought of being part of a maybe cure would be my strongest desire.

Just my way of thinking.

Not saying go or stay.

Your decision.

Helpful not so much.

Ok! Thanks-its a tough call but if theres no research theres no cure and no one wants to be a guinee pig do they? But perhaps i should step out? Whats to lose?

Thanks for the update Janzo, hopefully you are a little nearer to making your decision. . I’d love to say “go for it , just think you may be having access to a new wonder treatment “ unfortunately as I’ve previously said I chickened out of applying myself .....as much as I wanted to !!! I completely understand your reticence. It certainly sounds as though you will be very carefully monitored so that in itself is a big plus. I’m not sure but when it gets to this type of trial has it already been tested on humans? Perhaps a question you could ask ? The answer to that would be a factor in my decision making.

Yes thats an intelligent question to ask!

I will certainly take my time before consent and also i can leave at any time so thats a big plus. Thanks! X

Hi Janzo, I personally would do the study, because it will help future generations. I have been on other studies in respect of lung diseases , with travel expenses paid. Synexus are very good and you are carefully monitored, however the discision has to be yours, best wishes if you do accept

Ah thanks Katie,

Yes it looks like your well looked after by Synexus.

250 million people in the world are diagnosed with COPD so this study may help future generations like you say.

Not everyone gets it from smoking and there is a genetic link so if they research this more it would benefit people.
