Hi

Do a comparison.

IPF

COPD

You would normally expect a Spirometer test annually at your medical review.

A full lung function test may only be required once at first diagnosis.

Thanks, my GP thinks it not necessary. As a patient with severe COPD, I Would like to know if I am getting worse. I know you don't get better, but I want to know if it is getting worse. I CAN'T find the difference between pulmonary fibrosis and COPD.

Hi

Pulmonary Fibrosis is a restrictive condition. Lung scarring

COPD is a obstructive condition. Damage to the Aveoli

Both are incurable, both have similar effects in terms of breathlessness.

Thank you so much. Both are listed on my medical report. Pulmonary Fibrosis is probably listed because I have a nodule on my lung. It would be nice if you could get a simple answer from a doctor. I am not that lucky,

Basically COPD is an obstructive disease OBSTRUCTING air getting into the lungs. Whereas IPF is a RESTRICTIVE disease that prevents oxygen entering into the blood stream from the lungs, the lungs gradually lose their elasticity- That is very basic and in layman's terms - Hope it helps

Take care

Thank you Plumbob. That is exactly what I wanted basic explanation. Very scarrey though. It does help to at least know the basics. I am learning more from this site than from doctor. I think I will be finding a new one very shortly. Should have done that long time ago.

Glad you found several of description - I have done a lot of my own research as I had secondary conditions which has even confused the top specialists today

I wasn't happy with original consultant and changed to the great one I have now - never be afraid to ask - it's your body ? But tell them all symptoms as they can only go on what you tell them

Take care

If they would only listen and not get defensive when asking questions. You take care too, and thanks again.

Hi Owen, I know next to nothing about IPF but I do know that COPD also causes the lungs to lose their elasticity as the alveoli deteriorate.

Hi Trees

I am opposite of you, with my knowledge of COPD compared to IPF, and bow down to your superior knowledge of the condition... Hope I haven't annoyed any COPD ers out there
