Hi sooki

I have taken NAC for IPF and had no side effects my consultant said it may help. It seemed to reduce the cough and thin the mucus but at the moment I have a bad chest infection and taking the usual antibiotics so must admit I stopped for a couple of weeks now. After attending the same Hospital clinic for 3yrs and on ambulatory 02 I have been referred to another Lung centre and consultant to see if the drug Pirfenidone will stabilize my condition. So have to go through all the tests and scans again for their opinion.

Sooki profile image
Sooki in reply toimelda16

Hi,Imelda I am on pirfenidone started it last November,it's for mild to moderate IPF,not too bad on it,haven't much appetite but I think that can be down to the IPF,I am tolerating it well, have been having blood tests and liver has been fine,I just hope it does it's job and slows down the IPF, I am on ambulatory oxygen,I attend Papworth hospital even though I live in Birmingham,it's a centre of excellence for IPF.Hope you get over your infection soon, and I often forget to take my NAC,don't think it's vital to take them.Regards Sooki.

imelda16 in reply toSooki

Thanks sooki for reply I have heard of Papworth and also Brompton but I live in Manchester and up to now I would say Dia gnosis and treatment have been as anyone would get with IPF. As you know treatment is nil and then last resort Lung transplant I just want to keep up with the latest info and get the help I need.

rustydexter profile image
rustydexter in reply toSooki

hi Sooki I am hoping to get on Perfenidone , but must have a scan next week as I had cancer and had part of my lung removed. I think they feel it may be a waste of money if the cancer has come back . so I am keeping my fingers crossed ,it's a hard life but I can understand the doctors reasoning.

hi eve ,, sounds as if has been good for you,, i feel that daft now i actually have seen the letters N.A.C.but didnt know what it stood for, but after checking things through,,[and looking at a dictionary with all these big words lol :)] it seems this is a supplement/medication for many things, mucus reliever, for hair pulling ,many drug related things,, and even for help in stopping smoking, and many other things, i am always unsure of anything i dont know about, but i am still looking at it.,, thanks eve jimmy xx

It's ok, my son found this in USA a couple of years ago an d brought me some home but you can buy it on line or at holland and Barrett . I certainly think it has helped over the years.

i would just like to hear from folks who have used or tried this,, for copd..regards jimmy

For a wikipedia reader Jimmy123 easy peasy light reading

I've been taking 1800 mg/day of N-acetylcysteine for a few years. I've not had any side-effects, and though I just feel 'normal' now of course, I remember noticing a distinct improvement in my COPD symptoms when I first started using it. And it has many other health benefits . . . lef.org/magazine/mag2010/ma...

jimmyw123 profile image
jimmyw123 in reply tostilltruckin

hi still stricken, yes, thats a good link, and its good that you note that you do feel better for taking this NAC, , that can only be good, i suffer terrible from deep down mucus in the mornings , it seems to be right at the bottom of my lungs, i know if this stays there it is a haven for infection,[which i have had plenty of] often quite exhausting clearing this,, i have been using my saline neb after my salbutamol, it does seem to help, but hard going, i am on oxygen too.

do you think this NAC would be beneficial to me?,, thanks for the post still stricken,, you live and learn :) albeit slowly in my case:) thanks for the info, kind regards ,,jimmy

I used to have half-an hour's exhausting hard work every morning coughing up the night's accumulation of gunge. Not any more. I think you'd find NAC helpful, 1200-1800 mg/day in divided doses, and also . . . copdsupport.ie/about-copd/h...

jimmyw123 in reply tostilltruckin

hi still truckin,, yes, that sounds like me,ive got to admit that sounds good,as you would probably know, it really takes it out of you trying to bring up that phlem, , in fact a wee bit worried,as i seem to be producing more

gunge the last couple of days,,, is this NAC on prescription or can you buy it from say, boots the chemist for instance,[i did hear you could get it from holland and barrat] i am just going to look at your link now, but many thanks for your help advice,, well done and many thanks,, regards jimmy

p,s just read about the huffing, my resp nurse did teach me how to do this,[ but easier said than done when its very stubborn]. but there,s more detail in your link,, thanks .,,jimmy

I get mine from Holland & Barrett but smaller branches may not have it on the shelf. I asked my local store to order it in for me as I'm a regular customer. It's widely available online and often cheaper than H&B (though they do online too) - but I trust the quality of their products and prefer 'live' shopping . . .

jimmyw123 profile image
jimmyw123 in reply tostilltruckin

hi still truckin, yes, im like that myself, prefer to buy direct from a shop. rather than online, even if it means they have to order it, but i will be certainly looking into it, [sorry for delay in answering i was on the phone] once again many thanks,, jimmy

i would be willing to try this, as it seems there are more "fors" rather than "againsts," i think the main thing i was thinking about was re-actions with other drugs, and off course any side effects,..thanks for all that valuable info,,:_,,,jimmy

Hi Jimmy I have been taking NAC, since about October 13. and I do think that it has supported my immune system,I also take carbosystiene on script, which really does seem to have helped with the mucus.X

hi still truckin, thanks for this link, it certainly explains all, in great detail.

if i were to buy this online,i think you said holland and barrat do this, [i cant get out at the moment] can you tell me the amount to order,? and do i need a prescription? and how much it is? , i know its questions again, but i do really think this would help me, i have been wheazing quite bad lately ,each morning and i know its because of this rubbish lying deep down in my lungs, as when i do manage to get this up.. the wheazing stops,, but it is really hard exhausting work getting this up completely, it really tires me out.... many thanks,,,jimmy

Hi Jimmy, no worries, Stilltruckin told me about it on here, must have been in October, I have taken it since, I get it from Holland and Barrett, I have been to two different H&B now and both had some, Its not on prescription, think about 6pound for a bottle of 30.not exactly sure as we always get other things. Smells fowl when you open the bottle luckily Stilltruckin forwarned me, I pick up 2 bottles at a time but only take one daily,in the morning, May not work for you. But along with the carbocisteine for the mucus reduction,I have been pleased. you take care, enjoy your day weather here in Shropshire beautiful this morning,xx

hi june,, a big thanks,, when i get time and i am able, i will get that from holand and barrat, in fact my sister often goes to the big shopping centre, where there is a h. and b. she will get it for me,,[i read about the smell:) like rotten eggs seemingly]; but that wont bother me,, the main thing is getting this yuck up, without tiring myself,, best regards june,,jimmy xxx

p, same here in edin. lovely morning, makes a big difference,, spring on its way lol :)

It's £8.19 for 30 * 600mg capsules at H&B, but at the moment (and until March 13) they're doing a buy-one-get one-half-price deal on everything, so go online and stock up if you can't get to a shop soon - hollandandbarrett.com/pages...

I recommend taking 2 - 3 capsules a day.
