37% of what the doc expects from a patient same age sex height and weight with normal lungs.

One more thing docs like finding out when they treat broken lungs not all the picture only part and personal to you we are all different more about how you feel than numbers.

Hi susiecue62

r

My Fev1 is 23%. That is out of a possible 80% I believe.

There are so many factors to consider on the whys of reduced lung function that only your doc/consultant who knows your case could possibly give you an answer.

Sorry I can't be of more help susiecue62.

Hi susiecue62 Iwouldnt be saying it was good Im afraid equally its not dreadful we are all different our fitness levels all very different.I personally would say that if you can eat healthy food and improve your exercise ask to go on a PR course this will benefit you.Also have flu and pneumonia shots and try and stay away from sneezes and diseases especially this time of year which us lungchallenged people dread so.How are you affected with your condition so far susiecue? im 30% im a bit slow but am in the process of trying to up my fitness as i was the classic in that if a certain something made me breathless I stopped doing it! How stupid am I ignorance is not bliss on this occasion its very good to get out of breath at some points in the day and sometimes we over do it but we gotta try eh? :) Janexx

Hi susiecue62

My FEV1 is also 37% last time it was done. This indicates severe copd or stage 3. Like has been said above, everyone is different. I lead a very full life, use pursed lip breathing to get around (I sound like a steam train) and don't worry if people see me getting out of breath. Lots of good info and advice from Jane above. Getting out of breath every day is indeed good for you, essential even and doing a PR course (pulmonary rehab) course is the best way to get fit.

You don't say if you have copd, but FEV1 is usually taken as the main indicator of the level of severity of copd. But as people with the same FEV1 can vary wildly in how they function, there are other indicators of how you are doing. These come together under the name BODE index:

B = BMI (body mass index),

O = airflow Obstruction measured by your FEV1,

D = Dyspnea (breathlessness),

E = Exercise capacity (measured in the six minute walk test, i.e. how many metres you can walk over 6 minutes).

The BODE index gives a better overall view of how you are doing than the FEV1 alone.

Hope this helps. Take care :)

Better than my husbands he is about 27%! BUT I have to say we have decided not to be too interested in the "numbers" but on how well he is and how he is coping. That is a better indicator. Concentrate on staying well - the numbers only matter to the medics! Take care, TAD xx
