My mother has COPD ... has anyone tried the salt therapy specifically for COPD and if so, was it advantageous. Thank you for your input :-)

My husband tried the salt pipe but he didn't like it - so wouldn't use it. I personally thought it would be good for you - I have heard great reports from friends about salt caves and asthma but he couldn't tolerate the taste of salt! Sorry I couldn't be of any help! TAD xx

Hi, if you put 'Salt Therapy' and 'Salt Caves' in the search bar you willhopefully find old posts with peoples thoughts/experiences on the therapy.

Personally I'm willing to give it a go, in fact I have a £10 voucher for a visit to a local one and I'll post when I've been.

There are now quite a few all over the country. Nothing to lose and possibly something good to gain.

Best wishes to you and your mum xx

ps......... they aren't actually caves, just lounges with comfy chairs to relax & read, chat or watch tv while you breath in the salt therapy :)

A friend of mine who has severe emphysema and asthma, went to a salt cave (health centre) just recently, she has been having breathing difficulties since, however that may have been to do with having to travel through a high pollution area to get there and because the outside temperature was very cold on the day of travel. But it was a relaxing experience, some quiet time, to meditate, reflect, read a book or just get some shut eye :)

Let us know how you get on if you try it, you too peeg :)

I bought a salt pipe to help my asthma because a friend said it worked miracles for her breathing. Unfortunately it didn't seem to help me at all though I carefully followed all the instructions. Not long afterwards I was diagnosed with COPD and actually found myself wondering if the salt pipe had made things worse. Perhaps I was just looking for something to blame though, as it worked so well for my friend. (I've never smoked, but always been asthmatic).

Like lots of our meds, what works for one doesn't always work for others. I should think the relaxing time Peeg describes would be very good for us on its own, but if adding salt therapy helps some then that's great. I'll be interested to know how you get on with it Peeg.

Jabber, the doctors must not have been pleased diagnosing your COPD as a non smoker. Some/most drs like to blame everything on 'smoking'. I was a smoker prior to being diagnosed with COPD a few months ago, but I know that having asthma and hayfever all my 54 years is what caused my disease. It is easier for them to 'blame' the cigarette, rather than review and change medication ( I guess I could have been more proactive on that issue also. How many of us actually challenge our GPs). The fact that I stopped without their help has made them less pleased with me as I have asked them to remove from my record that I quit smoking using their cessation programme, when in fact I DID NOT.

I have used the saltcave a few times and it is a relaxing hour. The concept is that salt breaks down the mucus and it is an antibacterial and anti inflammatory substance. From speaking with the receptionist, it is perhaps best to have sessions for a few consecutive days for the salt to break down the mucus and then follow up as required.

Unfortunately, my nearest saltave is an hour and half or so away by bus and sometimes I am so tired, I can't even make it to the shops, so I know I will not and have not been able to make daily visits for a few days.

I tried the saltpipe and unless I was using it wrong, i was eating the darn thing

Read about these salt theories a while ago so asked my pr nurse and she said the medical pros don't rate them and definitely no medical support for them so i guess it's up to the individual whether they want to try them for thereself.

I had ten sessions of salt therapy over a couple of months I have asthma and emphysema , before visiting I had full pft tests which where 86% fev1 at my three month check up I have 78% nurse said it was a off day ?

But I did experience a lot of irritation after each session which I was told by there people it was due to my airways being cleaned out ? I'm not so sure I think it may have inflamed my lungs more each visit ? my consultant has put my meds up since because of my constant symptoms of irritation and seem to be on the mend hopefully....

I've had asthma for years and now copd. I tried the salt pipe as my breathing always improves by the sea. I have 1 or more 15-20 minute session per day and find it eases the breathing a lot

Hi, contact the salt caves as they usually give you a free session to try it out first , my mum has copd she wasn't convinced , she also bought the salt pipe and has felt no difference

I use one every night for 20 mins and it's been the best £20 I spent. For the first few weeks it made my cough and breathing worse but after that it has helped tremendously.

I can't speak more highly of them, they work for me.
