Harvest Elderflower to make Tea for a cough.

Would just like to pass on something that I have found useful. A teaspoon full of dried Elderflower in a mug of hot water, can be very soothing when you have a cough. NOW is the time to harvest the Elderflower. Wait till it's been in the sun for a few hours, pick flower heads [be careful of the pollen!!] and dry on trays in an airing cupboard. When dry, remove stalks and put in jars. Good preparation for the winter! As a natural remedy you can drink as you need. Have a good day all :)

Thank you Knowledweller, I was wondering if I could dry them,I'm about to make some cordial and need to get citric acid for my recipe! Elderflowers are great for building up your immune system. xxx

I love the taste of elderflower but have to avoid it when the kidneys are playing up as it tends to make the need to go more frequent!

Thanks for that tip, didn't know it could ease the coughs. There's a recipe in some wine making books for a non alcoholic drink made from fresh elderflower's if you can manager to pick them and make the concoction it keeps for quite a while. This year there are masses of elderflower about this year. I would stick to the concentrate from the herbal shop, but will try your remedy

Hi caroll. Not sure about H&B, but you could try looking at their website.

Elderberry are even better for the winter months, Its a lot of preparation spent making an elderberry rob, but by gum it is delicious and crammed packed with anti oxidants and vitamin C.

The alternative to elderberry rob making is a product called Sambucol you can buy in Boots or health food shop, its expensive for a small bottle but it is the black elderberrys and very cold for staving off a cold or treating cold symptoms.

Great tip to dry the Elderberry flowers, thanks knowledweller.

Of course you would have to leave the flowers if you wanted the berries to develop.

Hi Caroll, I am trying to keep cool, but doing ok, hope you are too. Try Boots the chemist if H&b don't have it, it may be a seasonal thing but you could try now and see.

Look after yourself x

a thought just crossed my mind I wonder if the herbal shops sell elderflower tea as they sell most other herb teas.I am off to look online.

They could well do Katie, you might get it in Neils Yard if you have one near you, they sell teas.

I've just checked its coming up on Amazon.co.uk

Have been on line Holland & Barrett do not seem to sell elderflower tea, however the good news is several other companies do, one being Teaworld.co.uk. Amazon also have suppliers and twinning s say they sell it but could not find it listed on line. If twinnings sell it you may be able to get it in big supermarkets. There was also mention of cordial on line but did not research that one. Hope this is of help to you.

Nice one Katie. Someone had to sell it. I have a number of Elderflower bushes where I live and they are dripping in flowers at the moment. So, partner and I are busy harvesting.... Elderflower Tea for Free!! Hope you enjoy it. :)
