Why does the screen say Windows is starting - should be Windows are opening ?

I have Win7Pro on the main PC, XP Pro on the other PC and the laptop. Given the choice? XP every time. Win 7 is so slow and clumsy by comparison. I have a 12 month old PC with an Intel dual processor and 8Gb RAM, SATA drives and so on - compared to a very old AMD chip single processor with only 2Gb RAM and IDE drives, the old box is quicker.

I am going to look for a cheap re-furb next time I upgrade. I got an old IBM in January, 1Gb RAM, XP Pro, 40Gb IDE drive, cost me £30 and I prefer it to the one (with Win 7) I paid £300 for...

I do so agree, XP was so much better than Win 7. As I see it, any upgrade after XP was/is a backward step. I wont be "upgrading" to Win 8. What a great idea to buy an old tower, thats the way I will be going too!! Thanks for all the good advice you give on here, you are very wise!! xx

Nah Gordon - Windows 7 Ultimate - beats xp pro sp3 every time..... although I do run a vm xp on that 64 bit 'puter. RAID 1 32 gb RAM... purrs like a puddy tat x x

Forgot to mention, built it myself, and cost less than £200 - including i3 and 2 x 500gb hdd

Like to see the build spec for that?

Given a choice between windows 8 and xp, I'd opt for Mint - those freebies are really improving and so much more stable than windows8

started with 3.1 and dos moved to 95 then 98, 2000,Millennium (beta for XP) then XP, Vista (beta for 7) Health went no money so my upgrading is going to be a slow process. I still have my old XP Pro rig as a www back up and it is still a great slick beast.
