Hi all. I was diagnosed with asthma as a child and was a lot worse than it is now. I don't really get any symptoms unless i'm doing something active, when i come down with an illness or when the air gets cold. Can asthma go away or can you only control it?

Hi & welcome to the forum. I think the old idea that people could 'grow out of' asthma is largely a myth, but people can certainly move to a position, especially if it is well treated in childhood, where it more or less stops being a significant issue. However, a lot of people will report that it can suddenly re-emerge in adulthood out of the blue.

In your case, it sounds like you have a very mild form of asthma, but you are able to identify some triggers that suggest it's still there, and you need to be aware of them. Cold weather & illness are common triggers & if you are getting a bit short of breath during exercise then don't ignore it, no matter how trivial it might seem. You don't mention if you are taking medication, but if not there'd be no harm in a chat with a nurse at your surgery just to check things out & make sure you're properly protecting yourself.

Hi Jen,

Unfortunately the tendency towards asthma will always be there. Hopefully for you it will never flare up but it always pays to have an in-date reliever medication readily available in case it comes on unexpectedly.

The following is probably not a problem for you if you live in the UK, and this is extremely rare, but is just an example of how things can happen. In Melbourne, Australia a few years back there was a deadly combination of a certain plant releasing its seeds and a thunderstorm. Nine people died as the ambulances were run off their feet and couldn't attend everyone. 8,500 people sought help. Some of the people who died had never had asthma before in their lives so had no reliever medication on them and didn't get to the hospital in time. If you've ever had asthma it just pays to have the reliever medication on hand for unexpected emergencies, especially if going overseas as it might be harder to get it.

I was diagnosed with asthma at age of 5. I had attacks but its gotten worse in 2009. Than in 2012 I was on ventilation couldn't breath on my own. Since than its been pretty rocky many hospital visits to being admitted. Seeing 2 different pulmonary specialist to seeing a cardiologist because my heart stopped make sure no damages. But sometimes my asthma act up outta the blue or majority od time when I catch a cold and it gows2 downhill fast for me. You think i b used to it not its hard everytime and if weather changes im sick any little thing trigger it
