Hi,

Just wondering if anybody else has suffered with mental health problems due to their condition & if so do you take anti depressants to help? I've been given them but I am scared about the side effects

I suffer with anxiety due to my health conditions which is not only asthma. I have never been on antidepressants but that is my personal choice and everyone is different. I would rather try natural approaches such as relaxation, meditation and mindfulness. However if you are unsure why don't you have a chat with the nurse at your Practice or go back to your GP. I have nothing against antidepressants and I believe they do help some people maybe short term to give them the help they need at the time. Good luck xxx

Yes thats the route that I want to go to before, going on antidepressants as I am only 22 so I hope I could sort it out without more medication first!

Thanks

Hello Sharnee,

I noticed on your last post that you take Symbicort. A lot of people report low moods and mood swings with this drug, and depression is a listed side-effect. With your experience it is easy to see that the level of asthma and frustration/stress caused will have an effect on how you feel. But I would certainly discuss with those people looking after your medication needs if Symbicort is absolutely necessary. I recently stopped mine after more than 2 years, when I reported to my GP that I was down and having mood swings, she immediately said "Yes, Symbicort can do strange things", I am now taking Bricanyl and Fostair instead, with Montelukast at night. Note that Symbicort also can cause coughing in some people (not good for us with CVA). Hoping that things begin to calm down soon.

Regards,

Mark

Oh god!

I have never thought or heard of symbicort doing that! I have been on 400/12 on the inhaler for nearly 2 years ( although I was switched to flutiform for a short time inbetween) tbf I do love the drug I think it works the best out of alot of the steriods inhalers I have been on but I am open to trying alternatives. I have my next Xoliar injection in a week so i will talk to my nurse and see what she thinks

Thankyou so much

I do, so don't worry you're not the only one. I got prescribed them too but I don't want to go down that route just yet. I'm more going down the route of therapy and talking to someone and if that doesn't work then the anti depressants it is. I'm on a lot of stuff so don't think taking something else will do much to myself. I'm also on symbicort and have been for 4/5 years but that isn't the reason for my mental health. Living with asthma, being darted with meds every week and day to day clear limitations are.

However I do have friends who have taken and are on anti depressants and they seem to work in their opinion. Every medication you put in your body has side effects some of which you'll never have so don't worry about it. If you are unsure at all about them go talk to your nurse/consultant.

I completely understand, that is excatly what I said I already have to take so many meds every day and night and injections every month ( plus painkillers everyday due to the pain in my chest as my asthma has been unstable for 18 months) I dont think I can stomach anymore tablets or side effects. I don't think I will take them yet. Although my nurse says lots of people with conditions on them to take the edge off but I will see if I can find other ways to deal!

I hope you get things sorted soon

Thankyou!

on Saturday I just kicked off at my hubby and cried for ever, I am going to the doctor tomorrow with lack of sleep and depression I thought it was the lack of sleep making me poorly never thought it could be the symbicourt or the preds ( been on these for nearly 2 years) as this has helped me no end. I take nytol to help me sleep and this has now kicked in and need only 1 a night. So i am hoping all will come to an end soon. I suspect the doctor will tell me to see what the consultant says as i have an appt with him middle january. My hubby is now helping me with lots of hugs and kisses. Shame it had to come to a breakdown before i got his help. But you cant always see what is happening to you until you break.

I am a nightmare to live with at the mintue because I can't judge my moods from one day to the next & it is lack of sleep! I am on Xolair injections and my second month on them was AMAZING! and everyone was saying how much of a change they saw in me and that was simply due to the fact I was able to sleep! People take for granted how much a good night sleep can change everything! now the injections aren't as effective because of the weather and I am on steriods which give me severe insomnia! It's just on going!

I hope you getting all the help you need and I think I might have to try nytol as I take calms at the moment and they aren't amazing!

Thankyou!

Icant believe im reading this. My Asthma has CAUSED my mental health to go to a place where it has never been before.

50 min ambulance wait when I was having my first ever Asthma attack in July has caused me to develop severe health anxiety and has resurfaced my obsessive thinking.

I am on Symbicort and I see the Astma nurses 1x a month but that 50 min of hardly being able to breathe has ruined me ESPECIALLY since I was discharged the same day and 999 had to be called again the following morning.

Really dont know what to do, Im mentally ill now and suffering. Only this week has the local mental health team started to take notice of me.
