in the last year i was diagnosed with asthma.

it started with a hacking cough i couldnt shift during the summer, i put it down to hayfever as it went in the autunm. then this time last year the cough returned and i was eventually diagnosed with asthma.

since then its been under control and fine.....now its wintery again the tight chest and tickle have returned. dont want to end up like i was last year.

any clues from people why my asthma seems worse in the winter when i thought pollen was the trigger???

any tips to help me thru the winter months?

Hello and welcome to the forum,

What meds are you on? Can you step them up? If not, I would catch the increase in symptoms early and pop into see your asthma nurse or GP for advice.

I'm not much help on the causes in Winter as it is my best time of year but I do react to cold air and always have a scarf over my mouth and nose to breath warm air. And indoors, I always need a window open to have some 'fresh' air in the room.

Hi measly,

Firstly I just wanted to say, welcome to the forum, and also, try not to let your asthma worry you or keep you from doing what you enjoy and love, asthma is like a leech, it thrives on controlling you and making you feel pants, grab it with both hands and take control of your asthma, and if that means visiting your local GP every week then let that be the case as that is what they are there for ultimately.

So, to your point about winter, as JF mentioned, scares are fantastic, I now have about 15 just so I can alternate between different outfits and colours. Another good idea is try to keep your home at a steady level throughout winter, constantly going up and down with the thermostats I find really does me no good at all as my lungs are constantly getting twitchy at the different temperatures. Try and keep your chest as covered as possible, jumpers coats, vests under layers or all of them, a warm chest means a happy chest. Try and drink plenty of fluids, it will keep you hydrated for one and secondly it'll help to keep your sputum (if you have any) thin which will allow you to be able to cough it up easier which then means that it isn't pooling in your lungs growing bugs. Try and keep as active as possible, the more time your up and about the better it is altogether for your lungs.

I don't think I can think of anything else at the moment, but if I do I'll try my best to let you know!!

Hope you find the forum as useful as I have!! (And sorry if I've taught you to suck an egg)

Xx
