Hi Chloe I've had a port for almost two years. Mine is in my arm but they can also be fitted in your chestt. You can feel them, i tend to forget i have mine unless it's accessed. They are fitted either under general anaesthetic or under local anaesthetic with or without sedation I had mine with sedation and found it fine. Please feel free to message me if you need to know anything else. My only problem is that in some of the units i goto acuteley they do not know how to access them or the correct procedure to administer medcines. When well enough I tend to give my own drugs i'm a nurse so alredy knew the correct procedure but this can be taught to patients. Some people also access their own I cannot as i cannot reach mine with both hands and you need both to access it. Hope this helps.
Hi Chloe,
I have had my port for nearly three years now.
As Sadwheezer says some hospitals are not experienced in accessing them. I have mine in my chest so I tend to access it myself mostly. If I am too unwell (or shaky) to use the gripper myself, I carry a copy of the protocol for accessing ports. Also I carry my own supply of grippers needles as not many hospitals have them or know how to get hold of them quickly. My husband also knows everything about them and can deal with it or give them advice in person or via phone. I would not like to be without mine now.
I hope you get on well with yours.
