Anyone else live in a group home? It's hard to cope sometimes, a lot of screaming and not all of the staff are nice.

Yes, unfortunately I had to many years ago. It was horrible. I remember the screaming and fighting. It was not a therapeutic environment and I used all my energy just to get through each day.

Yeah, I can relate. Hope you have a better living situation now.

Also, if you don’t mind me asking, was it a group home for developmental disabilities or mental health or something entirely different? I’m in a group home for developmental disabilities and have been wondering if a mental health group home would be any better.

Good morning. Thanks for your reply. It was for MH. I’m not sure if it would be any better. There were some people with dual diagnoses and they said the MH house was more chaotic. Ask staff who know you well where they think you’d receive the right support. It depends on the types of support services you need most. Eventually, you’ll transition to a less restrictive living situation where you can finally have more peace. I’m in a much quieter place on my own now but it can get lonely. What is your ideal living situation?

Good to know, thanks. Loneliness stinks! Message me if you ever want to chat. I think I would like to live in a supervised apartment. That way I would have housemates and support but with the lower level of care hopefully the housemates would be more manageable.

even if the environment was relaxing the fact you are compelled to mask all the time it will be exhausting. Your own space with in hand support would be better- is that possible?

I don’t mask much honestly, I’m not really able to plus I feel okay enough not to anyway because everyone here has a disability. I’ll have to look into that, my only fear is social isolation if I’m in my own place.

My mother gave my brother a book of complete poems of Robert Frost to take with him on this aircraft carrier deployment. It is said getting absorbed in reading something like poetry can help one to cope with their circumstances. I have read of prisoners reading the bible, when the only book available to them endlessly.

I suggest getting engrossed in reading if you can. Right now I am reading Sailing Alone Around the World by Captain Joshua Slocum. Prior to this book I read Through The Window of My Home by Sara Selver-Urbach on her concentration camp experience. That book is sure to make you feel you have it good!
