What's the best way to support my girlfreind?

She used to suffer from anorexia and now suffers from bulimia. She chooses to spend days away from me where I worry that she's either binging and purging or eating very little. I just want to help. Thankyou people.

I really feel for you - I know as a sufferer and from talking to my husband and family - just how hard it is from both sides. I know I shut people out of my life - pushing them away from me - and for you this makes things so tough. Does your girlfriend admit her difficulties - and is she getting any professional help? Hard as it sounds - from my experience the only help others could give me was to encourage me to get the professional help I needed and to be there when I was able to allow them to be near to me. To be forced to sit and watch someone harming themselves is so hard - but you must remember that you can only help when they open the door to you - and it is not you they are really pushing away - and eating disorder controls your whole life and emotions - I'm sure your girlfriend loves you - but the eating disorder at the moment sounds to be ruling and it is the illness that causes her to push you away when underneath she knows she needs you most. Sorry to have to say you can't do anything - but it is only through professional help that the situation usually changes - and your girlfriend has to decide this is what she needs! Good luck - I hope things work out for the two of you.

Hi my daughter is an anorexic. On my blog tomagcro.com is a link to the Good reads section. I recommend a book there which deals with the maudsley method and explains how you should care for someone with an eating disorder. I really helps.
