alcohol

my AF is triggered by alcohol and I was advised to cut down on drinking. I was only a social drinker anyway I decided to cut it out altogether. It’s not that straightforward as another trigger factor for me is stress and alcohol can help with that.!! However on Balance I think it’s best not to drink or drink very little. I thoroughly recommend zero beers they have improved a lot and actually taste like the real thing without the buzz.!! I think everyone has to find their own way with this thing. That seems to be no miracle cure anyway.

My husband highly recommends Guinness 0%!!I understand they have all improved enormously.

Unfortunately alcohol is a trigger for so many. At least you know what your trigger is. Many never find out.

Giving up alcohol is one of the worst sacrifices you have to do. I have never been a big drinker, but enjoyed a glass of wine and really miss one of life’s pleasures. I now, on occasions, have non-alcoholic wine, which is not bad. At least we have something! I have also got away with a very small glass of alcoholic wine infrequently. I think it’s just be sensible, listen to your body and everything in moderation.

Zero alcohol beer is pretty good these days, but I haven't found a low alcohol red wine that I could describe as anywhere near acceptable. Any recommendations?

Try McGuigans mcguiganwines.co.uk/blog/ne... Their zero Sauvignon blanc is really nice and not as sweet as some of the other brands. I haven't tried the red though. You can get it in Tesco.

Thanks. I did see their red Shiraz zero in Sainsbury the other day and felt tempted, but resisted. Maybe I will just have to try it, purely for research purposes.

When you say it's a trigger, did you get AF as soon as you'd had one drink?

Red wine can trigger me sometimes so only have half a glass a few times per week with dinner. I will have one or two beers socially occasionally but no more. Cardiologist told me the latest guideline for AF was no booze whatsoever.

for me it was what I did after alcohol or caffeine.. even the morning after… that was strenuous exercise. The 2 were associated. I also drink zero beer but have a mouthful or two of red wine during a good meal. I always have a mouthful of water following the wine so in some ways dilute the alcohol. And most importantly I do not exercise or go and run up the stairs etc.. for 12 hours to make sure it’s out of my system

Yes I can relate to that. Sometimes up to two days after a single beer though!

Everyone is different, but in my case AF has only been triggered by heavy drinking, not by the odd couple pints. That has only happened rarely, and usually corrects within 24hrs.

Semi permanent AF has twice been triggered by chest infections, as now, requiring, cardioversion or ablation to correct , fingers xd.

Alcohol was not a trigger for me but don't drink it due to the AF meds I have to take. I love a Becks Blue and the 0% gins are nice too..

I gave up alcohol overnight two years ago when I was diagnosed with high blood pressure. I now have BP of circa 110 over 72 controlled with amlodipine 5mg but also lost 2.5 stone, de-stressed and take regular exercise of over 300 minutes a week.

I honestly don’t miss alcohol, I now drink zero lagers and zero gin but I wish there was a decent zero wine.

Yes, whatever works for you is worth a try. I would solely miss my occasional G&T or glass of wine and find it has no noticeable effect on my heart. I find my condition waxes and wanes with a mind of its own, so trying to work out what does or does not affect it impossible. The last few days have been crazy and a nice evening drink has helped a great deal to calm me! ;-)

Totally agree.. for me the occasional drink doesn’t trigger me,,would hate to think what more than 2 or 3 would do for a social gathering, life is too short to cut out things you enjoy. If I was told my AF was trigger only by alcohol then of course I would stop..lol
