BPN ?

Hi. Anyone got any wisdom about this? Just had an email from my cardiologist saying mine is raised (1460) no idea what this refers to in terms of how it's measured. Anything over 100 seems bad. How bad is 1460?I have tried to find info online but lots of rabbit holes there.

Cardiologist says if symptomatic I need Furosemide or Ace but I have no symptoms at all.

Thanks in advance if anyone can enlighten me. Off with the dogs now.

Mine has been at around 2000 for a couple of years and nobody seems very concerned about it. It seems to be an indicator of how you heart failure may be progressing....I think. But do not quote me on this.I am not a medic and 'a bear' of inprecise memory.Ask your cardiologist or your GP about this test if it worries you.

hi - 10gingercats. Thank you for your reply.

I'm not really worried just ignorant!

and more worried that the cardiologist will try to put me on medication. Which if I had symptoms is fair enough but as I feel perfectly well and I am able to keep up with my chores I'm not inclined to comply.

Well I am still around at 86 and so far I am pretty busy and independent so the BPN can't be too 'bad'.I do not take anything for it and only take Apixaban, Bisoprolol and Furosimide. Had these for a few years. The test has become 'the vogue' in recent years and docs are doing it more often.,or so I have heard.

ok - I've not heard of it but that doesn't mean much at all.

i was thinking about you and that you have a raised level and seem to be ok which is great and makes me feel much better.

The furosimide is for heart failure to reduce fluid retention so you are taking something for it.

I was given dapagliflozin for bnp of 2000 now reduced to 1500. Apparently my cardiologist says bnp indicates level of heart failure!

Are you having an echo to check the condition of your heart?

hi. Yes indeed I had an echo done when I saw the cardiologist the first time.

Does not mean anything. Mine was over 2000 consultant said he will start to worry when it goes over 13000.So last time I went and saw him and said my gp had rung me up about it he laughed and said the AF has an effect in the number and if you heart is normal in all other ways just ignore it.

But Gp has to ring you if it goes above normal rate indicated by NICE

gosh - there seems to be a big tolerance for some people and treatment for others. Thanks for replying.

I looked it up. I think you're referring to BNP. This article explains it nicely. urmc.rochester.edu/encyclop...

Hi Broseley. Thanks so much for taking the time to both look up the subject and to reply to me.

I see I got the letters wrong so I'm glad to know that.

i read the article you sent the link for - it is a good clear article.

No worries, I hope you're happier about it now. My Mum had heart failure but lived to 93. She was on warfarin, digoxin and numerous other drugs for nearly half her life.

My husbands BNP was raised when we saw his cardiologist. I asked if this meant heart failure and he said "I wish GPs wouldn't do this test when patients have AF it doesn't help, just muddies the water" so we took that as a no, in his case.

interesting. It was my cardiologist who ordered my blood test. He has written to tell my my BNP is very high.

however I have no symptoms so I'm hoping that influences the treatment.
