Stopping Apixaban 24 hrs before a procedure. Advice please?

Having been told to stop Apixaban 24 hrs before a procedure midday Thursday, does that mean skip both tablets Wednesday morning and evening. Or simply skip Wednesday evening? Getting through to the hospital to check is proving difficult.

I had my op on the Thursday and my last Apixaban was on the Tuesday night but best you check what they want you to do, if you can get through !

I read that as if you need to stop 24 hours before a midday procedure on Thursday, then I would take the Wednesday morning dose and skip the evening and Thursday morning.

Apixiban has a half life of 12 hours. Best to check with whoever is doing the procedure though.

I see the logic of that. Will try to check again.

Same here, got a call from my consultant yesterday and he wants me to stop taking both my Wednesday tablets and Thursday mornings, prior to a procedure on the Thursday afternoon.

A nurse on the ward also said the same .

Good Luck

to be on the safe side ring them. I recently had surgery and had to stop 2 days prior but they gave me injections to give myself instead.

Thank you. It's all sorted now. I was just worried about getting through to them in time!

You need to ask the person doing your procedure that one. I am having a colonoscopy next Friday and have to take my last tablet Monday evening. That actually should be what they tell you is when you take your last tablet. If not ask them when you should take your last tablet.

Good point. 24 hrs before is too open to interpretation.

Yes I hadn't thought of that before but this Dr told me and I have had a couple of procedures and two operations since being on apixaban and just being told 36 hours or 48 hours before really means nothing if you don't know when you are actually having the procedure/operation. Sometimes the surgeon or Dr will say I hope to get you in at 2pm so far this has never happened to me in an NHS hospital and i have waited hours and hours - not that this matters once you are off your anticoagulants but for my first procedure I was told to come off the day before but not told day or night so took the morning one and when I told them couldn't have the procedure. From now on I shall ask "when do you want me to take my last apixaban tablet."
