Did they give you a PPI like lansoprazole? Constipation is a side effect.

I can’t answer your question on whether constipation may be linked to an ablation as I’ve not had one but I’m on Verapamil which causes the same problem for me. My salvation is prunes! I normally have three in the morning before breakfast and that works like a charm, although it did take a while to find the optimal dose! The only other advice I can offer is to make sure you’re drinking plenty of water and to start walking again once you are able to do so post ablation.

I hope you get some relief soon, it’s a miserable problem to have. Hope your ablation recovery goes well too. TC

Everyone with this problem, hopefully has a remedy. I go for natural solutions, which in my case are one/quarter to one/half cup of sauerkraut or a tea made from senna. In Canada, it is marketed under the name of. Smooth Move. Daily walks and drinking plenty of water are no-brainers for people with a fib or without a fib.

Did you get any new medication after the ablation , or were you told to stop any medication beforehand and then start again after the Ablation ( not just ones for your AF)? This slight change in medication depending on what they are for can sometimes cause temporary constipation when you go for a procedure.

If you occasionally suffer with constipation anyway , if your diet changed or you didn't drink much water before a procedure of any type and you didn't drink enough afterwards that can sometimes cause constipation.

If you try to drink the recommended amount of water each day now , and try some foods with soluble fibre this should rectify it.

And finally, we can all get a bit nervous about a medical procedure and along with changing drinking or eating habits that can also cause changes in our toilet pattern until we relax properly again.

So , along with drinking more fluids , try some relaxing deep breathing with eyes closed lying on the bed or in a chair , and gentle rub your tummy in slow expanding anticlockwise circles from your belly button to the outer edges of your stomach area , do that 3-4 times a few times a day.

This motion and breathing helps to relax the abdominal and bowel muscles and get things moving again.

Hope the Ablation went well and you will be back to "normal service" soon , take care , Bee

Re-Hydration, walking, prunes (they attract water into the stool in the gut) and daily kefir. Works for Hubble.

All the best for speedy recovery and long lasting NSR

I didn't know the Hubble (telescope) carried such a choice of breakfast foods. And what about the results! Hopefully not fired into space! 🤣🤣🤣

Any type of anesthetic used for a procedure or surgery will slow down the digestive system. Opioid drugs will do the same and so will any heart rate control meds. Drink plenty of water and eat plenty of fiber. Taking over the counter polyethylene glycol 3350 will help move things along.

Constipation is not uncommon after procedures requiring general anesthesia or sedation.

I find MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol ) can get things moving within a couple of days. There are also laxatives for quicker relief. Speak to your doctor..

If it ever happens to me then a walk usually does the trick.

After my knee replacement I had this problem and nothing seemed to work. Laxatives, prunes etc all to no avail. Then they tried warm prune juice and it worked like a charm.

The most assured way to relieve constipation, a foolproof way, is to use a magnesium salt. These are most easily taken as Milk of Magnesia or Andrew's Liver Salts. Take the dose either as you go to bed, or before breakfast, and expect results before lunchtime.

A gentler alternative, for long term use, is to drink a glassful Sunsweet prune juice with breakfast. I order mine from Holland and Barrett. Cheaper supermarket prune juices are more dilute and don't work. The more generally available Benefit brand is somewhat less dilute but does needs a larger quantity.

Pitted prunes also work, but less assuredly. They are, however, a very healthy food. I eat sun-dried organic ones fro breakfast from the "Bulgarian Nuts Company" or "Raw Farm" through Amazon. They arrive dried so need to be stewed very gently in a mixture of water and prune juice. They are truly delicious.

I did read not to take psyllium / ispaghula husk just before bedtime (i.e. Fybogel). You can buy it loose which is much cheaper and less wasteful of packaging, by the way. If you do, be sure to get the husks rather than the powder form. It's identical to Fybogel but without the artificial sweetener, colouring and flavouring.

is your movement less than normal following the ablation? I would try to introduce more movement if that’s the case

You might also find this useful! It seems that - as I have found over many years - not only do prunes relieve constipation, they are a "super fruit"! ;-)
