I’ve posted on a previous group and have had some lovely support but have been advised to post as I’ve been told this is were the experts are!
I’ve a question about an irregular heart rate issue that is bothering me!
Visited the docs last week after I noticed quite regularly that my heart rate dips well below 60bpm throughout the day. When I mean dips, it goes between 49 to 39 and then back up into the 70-100 range.. This can happen quite a lot throughout the day….
When I’m out walking or at the gym my heart rate doesn’t dip and sits at a steady pace, it recovers and goes back down quite comfortably…
As soon as I go into normal rest mode the heart stars messing around and my bpm are all over the place! One minute it’s 39, then 75, then back down to 45 before popping back up to 90 odd again.
The doc did an ECG and immediately said I’m suffering with PVC’s. He said that they don’t generally treat PVC’s but he would refer my for a 24 hour monitor. The doc also took bloods and said the result came back as normal.
Checking my health data going all the way back to 2019 my heart does regularly dip to high 30’s / low 40’s each month and I’ve never had cause to visit the doctor. My blood pressure as always been fine as well.
Can PVC’s last for years or even the rest of your life and are there other symptoms I should watch out for?
I do feel light headed sometimes and that’s about it. I’ve moved away from caffeine and alcohol as I must admit I used to have a couple of beers each day after work.
Any advice / thoughts would be greatly appreciated, I’ve uploaded a random day just to show you my average heart rate.

I had these from 1996 when I was seen at the hospital. The consultant said everything was tip top apart from these pauses when my heart seemed to miss a beat. He explained that an extra signal coming from another part of my heart caused it and it was nothing to worry about.
For the next twenty or more years I thought that the symptoms I had were the same. I was sometimes a bit light headed but didn't link the two. So I suppose they can last for years.
I'm absolutely no expert but it looks as if you might need a pacemaker fitted. I had a friend who passed out when he was on a hike with friends. They took his pulse and it was 36. He got one fitted quite soon after.
I'm absolutely fine. I had an ablation nearly three years ago and have had no atrial fibrillation since. My light headed symptoms went too.
It looks as if you are getting readings from your Apple watch. It was only when I bought mine that I could get a measure of how long the episodes lasted and take it seriously.
I still look at my hr on my iphone from time to time. My readings never show that kind of separation that yours do so I think there is more going on there than just PVCs.
I sent the same reading to my GP this morning and he emailed back saying I’ve no cause for concern, please wait for the 24 hour ECG monitor which will hopefully help diagnose whatever is wrong next
Here’s another post of the hourly rate taken end of April , these are much better readings don’t you think? In fact going through much of data over the past few years (I didn’t know you could check it hourly) it appears the majority of my data shows inbetween 50 and 100.
That's good. However, the hourly reading does just show the average over that hour but the 24 hour monitor should show anything that is wrong.
I used to be able to see the hr readings at about three minute intervals but that seems to have gone since I've upgraded my operating system. Perhaps I haven't looked hard enough.
Hi good to see you found us,saw your post earlier on BHF.Yes Pvcs can be upsetting and scary but not usually seen as a problem. My youngest son has had them since 18,after his first hangover lol) and still gets them in his 30s especially after unwise things such as stress illness ,drinking.
An Electrophysiologist is the person to see specialist in arrhythmia.
I'm not sure how the Apple watch works but it could measure the time between beats and then translates it to BPM.If you have PVC's then you would have a longer pause between beats and this could read as half of the normal rate.
Sometimes the ventricles could contract and not pump sufficiently enough for the pulse to be detected at the wrist.
A Premature beat is normally followed by a compensatory pause and distort your reading.
Apple Watches aren’t accurate when taking your heart rate. I’ve had a holter monitor done twice and it recorded my heart rate a lot differently to the watch. My watch also showed low heart rates in the 30s or 40s and really high ones, I’m sure it said 180 once. Unless you’ve got a proper ECG or monitor I really wouldn’t pay much attention to it.
it would appear that everything has settled down and gone back to normal.. heart rate is sitting comfortably between 60-100 now and has done for about 3 days now. The human body is very strange
What did you end up doing to return things to normal?
What you've described is exactly what I'm going through now (have been for a few months now) - heart is consistent when I'm walking or exercising but as soon as I'm resting I get non stop arrythmias and can really feel it.
(Cardiologists (3 different ones to be exact) say everything looks fine and it's benign, but I have Flecainide as a pill in the pocket)
Luckily for me everything went back to normal and I haven’t had any since. I cut out lots of coffee and stopped stressing about it. I found it settled the minute I relaxed and stopped worrying. Before I was checking my watch constantly and my anxiety levels were through the roof!
