Does it matter if you split the dose. i.e. 5mg in to 2.5mg am and pm

I suggest not. My cardio.thought carefully about my dose and decided on 2.5mg. Later this increased to 2.5 night and morning but not 5mg in the morning or at night. It may be this varies from patient to patient (I am not a medic) but you do need to check up on this.

Hi Ian.

I'm not a doctor and can't guide you medically - only your GP can do this. However, from my own experience of taking Bis that's the route I would take. 5mg knocked me for six but 2.5mg was OK in the morning and 2.5mg at night was fine as you sleep it off. That's just for me so speak to your GP to ask what's best for you - we are all different when it comes down to meds.

I’ve always split mine. I’m currently on 2.5mg twice a day. Having one higher dose in one hit drops my blood pressure and I feel awful. All doctors happy with it twice a day.

I’ve split my dose, with my GP’s agreement, for the last 6years. Taking it all at once completely wiped me out energy wise, plus my episodes are 95% overnight so a bedtime dose seemed like a ‘cunning plan’ and indeed this regime has been pretty effective for me. Now I take 2.5 mg am and 1.25 mg at bedtime. My heart rate does often drop to under 50 at rest and overnight and that in itself sometimes provokes an episode however swings and roundabouts I guess. I hope that you find a happy medium that works for you Ian 🙂

When I was on Bisoprolol, my dose was split 2.5mg morning and night. My cardiologist prescribed it that way to try and help me to tolerate it. I do the same with Nebivolol.

So yes it can be done, but you should check with your GP or cardiologist first as we are all different.

I also found it better with a split - 2.5mg on rising and 2.5mg about an hour before bed works for me.

yes really large I don’t know anyone on here with close to it

I was discharged on 10 mgthen had breathing trouble my GP put me on 15mg and it improved massively to allow me to walk more than half a mile or so now I can walk 6-8 miles with no real issue

I have no reviews booked from cardio or any check ups on me I have actually complained to PALS about it and they are trying to find answers for me

I can't imagine how it can, but bisoprolol, from what I gather, soon reaches a "steady state" in the bloodstream so a split dose, after a few days, might not achieve much. That all depends on individual metabolism / liver aspects, I think, though. Take account also that bisoprolol effects are not linear with dosage, so a lower dose might not produce an equivalent lower effect.

My own GP has told me to take the dose that works for me up to 5mg/day, but even 1.25mg lowers my heart rate significantly into bradycardia.

hi, do you still take bisoprolol? I was taking 1.25mg per day and had to give up because also I went into brachycardia. If I have an AF episode I will take a bisoprolol but worry it will kick my heart rate back down again.

I only take it as and when I get mild tachycardia or runs of ectopic beats as only rarely am I getting any AF these days for some reason. I was told not to worry about the bradycardia overmuch. If I take 1.25mg, for example if my heart is racing at 120-130 with ectopics, it slows it nicely in about an hour or two, but the next day, I often find it registers 49bpm or so so as a resting rate, especially if I'm sitting down or in bed. If I do any exercise, it speeds up okay though. It always surprises me how long one dose lasts - maybe 1-2 days.

My cardiologist has always been happy for me to take a split dose, when I asked. When my dose increased to 10mgs, he actually suggested the dose was split. When I was on a much lower dose, he said it was fine to take morning or evening. However, I tolerate Bisoprolol well, and it’s always a good idea to check your personal requirements.

my cardiologist also recommended splitting the bisoprolol to see if the dose would be better tolerated , as I was on a large dose ( 7.5 mgs ) .

I have been taking Bisoprlol since 2013 and was on a high dose for a long while then had it reduced I eventually had to go up on my dose and choose to split the dose and its fine 2.5mg twice a day.

Ask and it should be ok. I was told when trying to work out a suitable dose to split it and have never reverted. Personally I find bisoprolol a very difficult drug to tolerate and so splitting makes it slightly less intolerable. Still have brain fog exhaustion poor sleep etc etc but its a bit less awful.
