Sharing my experience re sleeping and false teeth.

Good Afternoon All,

A couple of weeks ago I accidentally went to bed and slept wearing my partial denture - I normally take this out and soak in a well known solution of a tablet and water to clean them. I had always noticed it said on this particular tablet you need only use for a certain amount of time but I think everyone who has dentures or knows any one with dentures will say they soak over night.

Anyway, that’s just what I did that night - sleep - no snoring and waking myself up. I have continued to do this and other than having to get up a couple of times when my bladder wakes me I am having the best sleeping experience I have had for years! So now I soak my dentures in that well known solution when I go for my evening ablutions and leave them while I watch TV for a few hours and then pop them back in to go to sleep. I can only imagine that the denture helps keep my mouth and tongue in the correct position. I wish I had found this out when my dear Dad was alive as if keeping his dentures in during sleep had stopped him from snoring the neighbours would have been so grateful - especially in weather like this when everyone has been sleeping with their windows open😂🤣

Whatever works for you. That’s so interesting. 🤷‍♂️👍

Most of us can benefit by looking into breathing a bit more; James Nestor's book Breathe.

I think you have found the solution and the reason. I once bought a device like a mouldable gum shield that is meant to help stop snoring. It didn't, as it happens, but many seem to benefit. My own problem is sinus trouble and a frequently blocked nose, causing me to breathe through my mouth during the night. There seems nothing to help with that.

I just thought of this. Have you heard of nasal strips? I don't know if you have them overseas? There is a brand here in the USA called Breathe Right. They I believe are super sticky strips made from medical grade adhesive. You place them on the nose right above where the nostrils flare out. They pull the nostrils open more to make breathing easier and help with snoring. I have a friend who has used them for years to sleep and he says they really do help. A lot of athletes (like our football players) use them to breathe better when playing their game. Might be worth checking it out. I bet they have them overseas. Wishing you the best.

That's kind of you to suggest those, Belinda. As it happens. I have tried them and still have a few in my bedside drawer. They were the same brand that you mentioned, in fact. They do help but not enough, sadly. I even tried a strange nylon "spring" type device which goes inside the nose, and that was far more successful but again, not sufficiently, and it often fell out.

Luckily, because of my arrhythmia issues, I had to recently switch from a drug I take for my enlarged prostate called doxazosin to one called alfuzosin, and, lo and behold, the congestion is now somewhat better, even though still variable.

Thanks again for thinking of me! We are going through a mini heat wave here, with the next two days forecast to break all previous records at 40C (104F) with overnight at 25C (77F). I do hate heat, so this is going to be awful!

Sorry the nasal strips didn't well for you. But you said the new med you're on seemed to be helping. Always something isn't it?😕 Hang in there.Be careful in the heat. The U.S. is having high heat around the country. No fun.

I used to use those plasters and they worked well but being so old and my skin so thin now when I try to use them they pull the skin off where they stick and make the sides of my nose bleed.

They really do stick well I see athletes using them.

I have an upper partial. I have forgotten to take it out sometimes before going to bed. My dentist told me it's best to take it out at night to let the tissue in my palate "breathe". Your reasoning makes a lot of sense. The teeth are there for more than just chewing? I never gave it much thought til your post. Thank you.

Take care and be safe in the heat I see you're having in Europe. 😞
