Hi folks.

I have had PAF for a few years that always self corrected. About 6 months ago I had a persistent attack and went to A&E. Was given Flecainide and it corrected in an hour. Had all the usual tests and my heart is in rude health. It happened again at the turn of the year and I was given pill in the pocket. It has happened 3 times this week and I have to go back for a reassessment. All my attacks happen either during the night or first thing in the morning. I have been on a very strict diet of late and lost a lot of weight quite quickly. Does anyone have experience of diets being the cause of an increased frequency of AFIB.

Hi Kennyb, well done on your weight loss but I’m sorry it has stirred the AF monster!

It could be that it’s a progression of your AF, as a lot of folk do say it’s a progressive condition, however, I don’t know what diet you’ve followed to lose weight rapidly but there are some studies that suggest low carb diets can increase AF frequency in those susceptible. My own experience is that my ticker doesn’t like rapid changes in anything really, slow and gradual seems to suit it better….. that’s my excuse anyway😉

I hope things settle down for you soon.

I agree with Threecats slow change is important. However, losing weight is one important Lifestyle change for the better, others no doubt will follow.

Sounds like you have vagally mediated PAF and possibly too much stress during the day. I would look carefully at all aspects of your life and consider those long term present factors, you may be used to them but could they be contributing to the issue.

In the meantime, don't let your heart get used to 'tripping into AF' as the more it does the more it is likely to happen. Ask your cardiologist whether you should take a daily dose of Flecainide until at least the episodes stop (whatever is needed 100 or 200mgs). Also x2 daily brisk walks of 1 mile are good - makes the heart do a strong beat.

Cheers - I definitely think it's due to diet. Also I have not been sleeping well for about 3 weeks which is definitely not like me. Got an appointment on the 2nd with an Electrocardiologist so a good chance to discuss options
