You can have 24 , 48 or 72 hour holter monitors or even much longer. I wore one for two weeks once.
They are great as they usually ensure that you never have an AF event whilst wearing one.
Lots of different types but the last one I had was very small and easy to wear.
I've had 24 hour tapes and a spiderflash which I think was a week long thing.
Neither showed AF, and one of the 24 hour tapes was really bad at keeping on so data was incomplete.
The have had them for 24 hours, 3 days and a week.
I wore mine for one week, otherwise erratic beats can be missed.
This is a general question to everyone above - WHY does that always happen? Bob you are quite right - the answer to AF - wear a monitor permanently.
Two weeks and it did show AF, Heart block and SVT whereas the ones I’d had for 24 hours and 3 days didn’t.
Hi there, new to all of this but diagnosed with AF last November. I am on waiting list for 'event monitor' but reading this post I thought that the whole point of wearing one was to record any AF events, etc, Can anyone enlighten me please - thank you.
Quite which is why it is so strange that wearing one usually means your heart behaves perfectly. lol 😁
Yes, you wear it in the hope it will catch just what your heart is doing. Hopefully, it will show that for you. What we are saying is that quite often when you wear a heart monitor, the heart behaves beautifully. Take it off and a day or so afterwards the heart sometimes acts up again. Is it sod's law, or our minds enjoying the security of the monitor being able to record an event?
Jean
Thanks Jeannie - I am just glad I am getting one as if I sit around and do nothing my heart behaves, but as soon as I ask it to up the bpm's like for instance on a walk over the next 24 hours it sets off again with lurching and what I can only describe as 'quivers/like a jelly shaking on a plate'? I cannot lie on my left side in bed anymore. I have been put on waiting list again for Cardiologist but beginning to think it might be the Sotalol my body doesn't like - my bmp are down to 42 from 45bpm [resting]. [been on it since November last year as Bisoprolol couldn't control it. I am not a stressful person and just living with it now but don't want it to 'control me' if you know what I mean.
Push for a one week / 7 day tape .
Just an aside. You spelt Holter with an "a," as in horses halters and women's halter tops. It's actually holter with an "o" named after Norman Holter of Holter Laboritories who invented it.
A holter monitor is usually worn anywhere from 24-72 hours, or even longer, pretty much what Bob said. It's up to the doc to decide how long its on you.
Ive had 24hr 7day and 30day monitors. I feel 24 hr is a waste of time and money. It was the 30day one that gave the best info. For.me it was a case of "gottcha" as Bob said AF said usually hides shorttime.
Hi
I hav had 3 halter monitors of 24 hrs each but my AF shows on an ECG.
I think it depends whether they can get a good reading of your AF.
I have heard of 48 hours.
