I had Amiodarone administered in hosp over 24hours before carrying on with the tablets, it was the only drug that worked.. although it took another 24hrs to settle. This was prior to the ablation, which was 3 months later. I came off Amiodarone same day of successful ablation. Just on Meterprolol and Apixaban now.. I’m occasionally tired and have arrhythmias but it’s nothing compared to the AF.

The best antiarrythmic available. My husband converted back to NSR about 4-6 weeks after starting Amiodarone.

The down side is that it’s also the most toxic and many people suffer affects so you need to be well monitored. My husband has done well on it and thankfully not suffered any serious affects over the 2 years he’s been taking it.

I seem to be one of the "lucky" ones too. I've been on Amiodarone on and off over the last five years. Whenever I've stopped afib flares up again, so I'm now on 200mg three times a week, which seems to work for me- touch wood. I get tests every six months and no problems. I know most people will give it a wide berth, but it's not all doom and gloom.

If you were in persistent AF for any length of time, it is standard to need another ablation. I took Amiodarone after my first two ablations and for me , I feel, it did more harm than good . I will not take it again. I believe CD's husband is on a low dose. My EP after my first ablation stated that "drugs will hardly solve the problem." Do watch your thyroid when taking this drug.

Well I’ve been in AF/Flutter for four months and been taking Amiodarone for three months and still in AF. Waiting for cardioversion but have my doubts about it working as the Amiodarone isn’t helping. I’ve had three ablations. Hope you everything works out for you.

Worked right away for my partner(age 72), after cardioversion had failed after 9 successful. days.

Worked for me as a rate control drug but sadly it affected my Thyroid and EP discontinued same . Best wishes. PhyK

I’ve taken amiodarone two different times, both after failed ablations. It did not work for me. Flecanaide has worked the best.

I was prescribed Amiodarone and after much research declined to take it, so I have no experience. I will say that a neighbour who lived in my building who had extensive personal experience with this drug advised me not to take it.

My hubby took it for a couple of years - had bad reactions to sunlight (even with factor 50), eye problems, and finally lung problems - Scarring on the lungs. This was only discovered because he caught pneumonia and it was found during his tests/treatment - we thank our lucky stars that he caught pneumonia! He now has to see a respiratory consultant and have regular spirometer tests &.CT scans to keep an eye on his lungs, as well as the cardiologist for AF!
