Ablation

My husband had an ablation 11 days ago, he is 74.

He has had persistent Afib for years. Doesn’t feel it at all. The Ablation has left him feeling terrible.

He is terribly sore, fatigued, can’t sleep. He is so disappointed and according to our home devices he is still out of rhythm. We know it takes time to know if the ablation worked, but he did not expect to feel this bad. He had several cardio versions through the years, but each time he had a drink of alcohol he would go right back into afib. He says he will not have another ablation.

Hi

It would be wise to get him checked over as I don’t think he should be feeling really ill. Re results it’s too early as you know. Best not to have alcohol as he’s found it to be a trigger. Let us know how he gets on

If you have read him the fact sheet on recovery then maybe you should call the team where he had the ablation done. It does take far more time than you expect.

I also had the symptoms your husband is having after my ablation, I couldn’t walk across the room without having to sit down and catch my breath. I felt as though I was suffocating when I tried to go to bed, ended up sleeping in a recliner for a few weeks. Two months after the ablation I woke up one morning in sinus rhythm, and haven’t had afib since; took me about a month to start breathing normal and getting my strength back. My EP said it takes two to three months for the heart to heal.

Best wishes to your husband, hope he makes a full recovery.

I felt rough for 2.5 weeks. Then it gradually died down. I'm guessing if your husband's heart has become used to AF, having the ablation will have upset the status quo rather. I'm not a medic but you can tell him I felt exactly the same at first - seemed worse than ever. Early days.

Oh, yes, so many of us have been there. It’s really quite a major trauma to your heart. We look fine on the outside, but our hearts are screaming to slow down and take it easy. I remember trying to go up a flight of steps a few days after ablation and finding I had to stop several times. I was astonished! But it spoke to me about what a process my body had been through. The dr might have said you’ll feel fine in a few days, but they probably haven’t had this procedure done to them! It takes a good while for everything to simmer down. Hang in there w him!

My Cardiologists both said in a few weeks I would feel fine. I am 84 and NO - 4 months later I still unable to walk more than 10 feet...have NO AFID....BP OK but not able to do much. Never thought it would take this long as most physicians have NO CLUE...
