Thank you for sharing this with us Steve.
As most of us glaze over when statistics are mentioned and as you say, the studies are written for the cognigenti, rather than the layperson, most of us do not know how to assess Risk:Benefit of medications and therefore need to rely upon our doctors as experts, which is why, in the main, we listen.
I found the banking analogies helpful, I’ve used that many a time myself, but it does mean you still need to have a basic knowledge of how investments, percentages and returns work.
What amazes me, evidenced on this forum, is how many people do exactly what you say they shouldn’t do in your video ie: accepting - well my doctor told me to take it - without knowing what they are taking, what it does or how it works and without researching and thinking for themselves. Is this blind faith that Doctor is correct? We only need to look to the Shipman scenario to see that can be literally fatal.
Is is it some sort of generational based myth that Asprin is a harmless drug, repeated enough times it becomes a ‘fact’ Asprin is helpful - just because it’s been used for generations? Would Asprin now pass US FDA scrutiny for a drug safe to be sold over the counter?
For many of us on this forum I would imagine that a similar assessment on the Bank of the the use of anti-coagulants and beta-blockers used to control heart rate for AF might be very useful. Speaking personally - I’d really like to know more about why beta-blockers are considered the first drug of choice to treat AF, after anti-coagulation, when so many of us can’t tolerate them and for many more, QOL on them is far worse so my question would be:- is there a case to put for beta-blockers prolonging life? Ditto anticoagulants but I would imagine, although I may be wrong, that there will be more data on anticoagulation?
