Femoral arteriovenous fistula?

Rats! Yesterday diagnosed with an arteriovenous fistula femoral caused by the ablation I had last Friday. My bloodwork showed anemia, as well. The good news is: no AFIB! Waiting to hear back from EP as to treatment options. A bit discouraged and overwhelmed.

What a hassle for you after your ablation. One step forward two steps back, but you will get sorted and things will get back on track. Chin up, discouraged i understand but things will improve and you can look forward to better times ahead. Dig in for now and look towards a better future. Best wishes.

Thanks, Meadfoot! It helps to have a place admit being discouraged, seems to lighten the load.

It certainly does, this forum has helped me a great deal in difficult times over the years. We all understand which is so comforting.

Sorry to hear that Nigel. I'm guessing that your EP, or someone else who is an expert will repair it. Let us know your next step please.

I'm pleased to hear that your ablation was a success. How are you feeling health wise?

Thanks for asking! Was more wiped out from this one than the one I had in December. The bloodwork they did yesterday showed some anemia (which is new). They may be adding to my fatigue. Much better today, though!

Hello Nigel,

I do hope your problem has been resolved and if so how did they resolve it? I also have low iron and I can’t help but think it’s from all the hospitalizations and all the voluminous blood draws they took from my body which can have an effect. How have you resolved your anemia I see this post was nine months ago and I’m just wondering how you’re doing today? What were the symptoms of your femoral fistula?

I’ve had 10 cardioversions since 2014 and two cardio ablations in the last year and the second one knocked me down hard.

My heart has been OK but all these things took a terrible toll on my body, ( esp that second ablation) Still not right. Cheers and happy Christmas!

sorry to hear this NigelThere are some cases of this on the internet and surgery seems to be a good remedy- it's good that it's been diagnosed- have they said when you will be treated

Sorry to hear your news Nigel and hope you will feel loads better soon. At least having to have bloods done the anemia was found and can be treated. In the meantime take it easy and continue to rest, rest and then some. x

I developed a fistula in my groin after several ablations. Had it operated on and is fine now

Was the recovery bad? I’m gathering there’s no emergency and that some of these resolve by themselves or with pressure. I was SOOO looking forward to being able to garden and exercise this summer!

Was uncomfortable for a little while till staples were out.Doctor did tell me it was the biggest she had ever seen!! Had numbness in top inner part of thigh but overall not too bad.

How long did they wait after the ablation to fix the fistula? How soon were you able to get back to exercising? I’m really hoping this doesn’t ruin my dreams of getting back in shape. Sorry to be asking, very hard to get good info from my people. Thanks so much for sharing your experience, it really helps.

Quite some time as I didn’t even know I had it. It cropped up during an examination 3 years later, so don’t know when it started. No not an emergency at all, but I had it done pretty promptly when discovered. My choice as I didn’t want it to get worse, not knowing what would happen. My only exercise is golf and swimming. From memory about 3 weeks for the swimming and maybe 4 for golf.

Still waiting to hear from EP; I’m taking that as a good sign that it isn’t a big emergency!

Really sorry to hear this. It is one of the complications apparently, because my arrhythmia nurse mentioned it as something to look out for when I mentioned chest pains the night after my ablation. But it's fixable isn't it? Just a longer timeline than you'd planned. Stay positive as it's up to them to sort it out.

Have appointment for another duplex ultrasound followed by a consultation with a vascular surgeon in early May. Will update everyone. Thanks for all the support here!
